Any Coin Collectors????

06/08/2020 11:17 PM

Today I took my container with spare change coins to get it counted and put into my "future vacation" fund. Much to my surprise, the gentleman brought out several coins that he saw as foreign.

Funny thing since the coins have been gathering for 6-8 months and I have not been out of the country in 4-5 years!

I can see a couple are Mexican pesos, but others make me curious! I want to show them to a couple local shops, but skeptic that I am.....I don't want them to say a piece is worth a dollar (US) when it may be much more valuable.

Any thoughts from this massive brain-trust????

A good way to realise value is to list them on a well-known internet auction site (name withheld).

Money is not worth anything until it is travelling away in exchange for something else.

Well first of all to evaluate any coin you need a high definition picture of both sides, which I usually get with a scanner, condition is everything in a collectible coin...second you need to have the coin verified as genuine by a coin grading service like PCGS , because the Chinese have flooded the market with fakes...I would just take them to a local coin dealer and let him check them out, if any of them are worth anything, he will try to buy them, at a discount of course, but don't sell...

I don't have a problem with the post, just curious, as I thought this was an engineering forum.

Agreed - a bit off topic....

But this is the smartest group of people I can connect with.

Wanted opinions here first!!!

Foreign coins that "masquerade" as US coins seldom have much value. Usually their exchange value is less than the US coin they imitate in size and weight. The Mexican 2 peso is worth approx. $0.09. I would suggest you give them to your grandkids (if you have any) or save them just for fun. But I don't see any significant value here, from what I can tell in the fuzzy photo.

NECCO wafers were the wrong weight, but they did work in the tollways when accidentally thrown into the basket.

Don't feel bad. They said the tolls would be removed after the roads were paid for.

That was years ago..

The most valuable modern coins 'to me' would be a double stamp misprint.

I don't collect, but appreciate .. give the odd coins to my son.

JE - thrown many coins in the baskets when I used to travel to Chicago for work (seems most all my employer's US headquarters was in Chicago - love the city!)

You know those temporary fees/taxes never are temporary!!!!
