General Purpose USB Analog/Digital I/O

11/05/2007 5:12 AM

Hi, Folks,

I'm looking round for a bit if kit I can use for general purpose I/O on the bench. I need something flexible, with digital and analog inputs & outputs - the analog I/O levels aren't too important, as I can always lash something up for scaling. Resolution isn't too important either; it'll be used mostly for qualitative work (looking at trends etc.).

I'm after something cheap & cheerful. VB drivers essential. Best thing I've spotted so far, for the money, is the Labjack U3. Has anyone out there used it? Anyone got any better solutions?

BTW I've put this into the General section, as I do with most of my thread starts, as it could come into any or all of 4 or 5 of the specialist sections.

Thanks in anticipation,

John

Thanks, Anon, looks like a handy little gizmo. Shortcoming for my requirement is lack of outputs - but I may get one anyway!

Labjack is a good unit -- we've used them several times. They're especially good for the price.

Try PICO in the UK and HOBO in the US. You could also patch together a taylormade system using Parallax Stamp.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've looked at the PICO range, and they look like just the job for higher spec. units (picoscope etc.), but for what I need at present, the Labjack seems to win out on cost & flexibility.

Thanks for the reminder about the STAMPS - I'd forgotten they existed! Not really what I'm after now, but worth bearing in mind for other projects.

Also thanks to Bill for the comment.

I looked at this when it was £34.99, and thought it good value, then. Even better value, now, but not quite flexible enough for my needs - some of my ideas need 5 or 6 analog inputs (and I don't want to spend time lashing up a mux); others need analog output, others both A & D, I & O.

Thanks for pointing it out, tho'. I think I've settled on a Labjack, but I'm now split between the Maplin job and a Stamp, or maybe a Joystick thingy (see Anon's post), for doing other stuff (long term monitoring of this'n'that, which would otherwise tie up my "main bit of kit").
