Viable means practicable or workable. Technology means technology. The two words used together means any technology that works.

Any technology can be measured against this definition. A viable technology is a broad definition and could be:

  • construction equipment
  • farming equipment
  • a technology used in a medical field such as a hearing aid
  • wheels for vehicles
  • a hammer
  • a screw driver
  • a general purpose computer
  • etc, etc, etc.

Yes an LED is a viable technology,

LCD screens are also a viable technology.

Re: VIABLE TECHNOLOGY

Viable is also used in context in that the technology can sustain itself.

This could mean:

  • that it will not be obsolete in a short period
  • it is maintainable
  • it will continue make a profit
  • that the need for it will continue for a long period
  • that there is no road blocks (political, physical, environmental,or social) to its manufacturing, vending or delivery.

Re: VIABLE TECHNOLOGY

so far the comments direct me that VIABLE TECHNOLOGY is not a technology itself ..but a phrase that is use for some specific gadget or technology.

what i m confuse is that i heard that VIABLE TECHNOLOGY is itself a separate TECHNOLOGY...

i see many different definitions of this TECHNOLOGY...

please help me out ...

and tell me from the beginning that WHAT IS VIABLE TECHNOLOGY?..
and is its basic purpose?

Re: VIABLE TECHNOLOGY

To the above information I would add that the technology not only needs to be operable but also cost effective. What may be viable in one situation may not be in another. It is a very broad term that could encompass many things or none at all depending on the design parameters.

There is a company called "Viable Technologies" that specializes in equipment for hearing impaired students, but there is no specific sub-set of technology called "viable". Sorry...

Viable Technology or Viable Technologies.

In either case "viable" is an adjective, modifying Technology/Technologies.

Viable means a useful, workable, or meaningful Technology/Technologies.

A specific Technology may be useful & meaningful or it may be totally useless.

Does that help to clear up your confusion?

Re: VIABLE TECHNOLOGY

I have already answered your question.

Of course many companies claim to be a viable technology. Some companies have also named themselves viable technologies. A Viable technology is always a good investment. (the word Viable actually means it can live and reproduce.) In the economic world, Viable it is used to separate a company that will be around for a long time. If your company creates a "viable technology" it is creating something real that will be around for a long time instead of transient things such as food, money stocks, consulting services, etc.

Normally If a company can answer all the questions in Post 2 with a yes, it will claim to be a viable technology.

direct me that VIABLE TECHNOLOGY is not a technology itself .

Correct.

I suggest you read the answers alread given ... they are correct, rather than simply repeating the question.

It is the same as asking for details of 'Tasty Food'

'Tasty' can apply to almost any food...

'Viable' can apply to almost any technology.. it just means 'one that works well and is practial' say, for example the internal combustion engine, the lever, hydraulics. but would exclude ideas like 'wireless power transmission' and 'perpetual motion' as these are not viable.

aarij.ahmed

Viable technology is a phrase that defines , practicality, ability , reliablity , effectivness ,acceptiblity , functionality that benefits us in someway or other , whenever a technology is designed and developed it has to be meet all requirements mentioned above plus other related to government norms , international rules and regulations , environment concerns , before they are put to task , use , commercialised , different industries (electric , civil ,food , medicine to say few)define different regulations respected to the product . You mention LED as atechnology ,its prime function to emit light(basically a semiconductor device ,enhanced diode) as we define as a technology in lighting industries , it is here in the market since its existance but could not replace other lighting mediums like incedescent lamps , flourescent lamps , cfl tube, sodium lamp , , mercury lamp , arc lamp and many ,except for indications due to low power consumption , until now were newer developments have made them popular enough for replacing conventional lighting technolgy , because now you call it viable technology , it is meeting all demands mentioned above plus that already defined by older conventional technologies with added advantage of effeciency so it is viable technology so older technolgies are on verge of becoming obsolute ..........hushh.

It's easier to give examples of non-viable technology to illustrate what you are asking! Take Star Trek, for examples of non-viable technology as of 2007:

  • The phaser
  • The transporter beam
  • The warp engine
  • The photon torpedo
  • The tricorder
  • The cloaking device
  • The wormhole

See where this is going (boldly, where no-one has gone before....)?

All technologies that work & are sustainable are viable. You have to be more specific in what you are looking for e.g. you specified electronics, what exactly do you mean by this? Components (e.g. LED, transistors etc)? Fabrication methods?

Re: Viable Technology

No I have seen it before.....

An uninformed boss hears a cliche word, or is advised to get something and must have it right away (without knowing what it is). He then dumps the actual work of obtaining the must have item on to some poor unsuspecting worker. The boss is very impatient and cannot take the time to explain the task to the worker (also is unable to, since he does not understand it himself) After all what is he paying the worker for? If the worker is smart he will research the item and provide the options to the boss (meanwhile educating him) before purchasing the item. This way the boss will not embarrass himself in the future or will not be upset with the selection made by the poor worker.

Simple:

  1. the boss has a status to keep up
  2. the boss is paying you to do all the work
  3. he wants to be educated but cannot ask for it from his subordinates. (status again)
  4. If you embarrass him, you will be without a job. This makes you a scape goat and he can keep his ego.

Hint: When educating the boss make it look like a professional presentation (that he can reuse). Present it in a way as if you know he already knows. He will not acknowledge it but he will appreciate it (and not be embarrassed).

The poor worker should not just find the quickest way to obtain the item. If the boss is impatient, give him interim presentations showing your progress (and educating him)

So true! You are a keen observer of "cubicle life" LOL. There is only one way out and that is; refusing to work for incompetent management.

In my past I have quit rather nice jobs because of incompetent management. As a contract engineer my employment is always based on performance.

I have since learned to interview my prospective management before I accept a position. I have been mislead at times but overall I'm getting better at "picking and choosing".

I've worked for some great bosses, really competent and instructive individuals who contributed greatly to my skills. They have greatly sharpened my "management interview" skills for which I am eternally thankful.

Some people do not have a choice of who they work for.

I always like to leave the situation better then I found it. (from my old Scouts training)

An incompetent boss can simply be an added challenge.

Nice idea , interviewing the management.

Re: Viable Technology

11/07/2007 11:55 AM

I admire your courage in accepting "an incompetent boss can be an added challenge". I'm too impatient to accept a challenge like that.

My last layoff back in the early eighties caused me to rethink my employment objectives. I had worked with a few contract engineers and I knew they made more money than I did for the same work so I signed up with an agency.

Within two weeks I was making twice what I had made in my old job. I have since traveled around the world working for some great and some not so great companies. I've always made more than the "company guys" and I have worked steadily for twenty seven years (excepting vacations and holidays of course).

I have never regreted that decision. My life and my family's lives have been enriched immeasureably from the experience. There are many advantages to remaining employed by one company if the company recognizes tenure and values near retirement employees.

However the trend in the past has been to replace older workers with younger, less expensive, workers. This unwise concept has made my employment more secure.

Many jobs require an experienced perspective which younger employees may lack. "Been there, done that" is valuable and so is the personal network of past associates, managers and specialists who can quickly provide answers to complex problems (much like CR 4).

Viable= something that will live and grow(not rapidly die away)

Technology= Science of making something

You got the meaning?

I wish you see my simple Technology for making my WonderChairs/WonderBds in

That is Viable--Bamboo grows plentifully-is used by us to manufacture (Technology)bodyfriendly, universally affordable , No-Wood-No-Plastic units which help getting better body comfort and hence better efficiency for user.

If you wish to importThousands /Lakhs/Crores Kits to assemble each in a few minutes-- please mail me mikemahant@hotmail.com

Seriously, to me this is not just a viable technology, i would say in many parts of the world, it is vital.

I'm glad we see more bamboo usage, in flooring for example.

The highly technical modification you refer to requires the use of an angle grinder, an oxy-acetylene torch, and usually a welder. Wait...that describes almost any highly technical mod...sorry.

I FOUND IT!! I FOUND IT!!

To modify the wrench to go from SAE to metric, you turn the screw looking kinda thingie in the middle of the wrench.

In reality, I keep both SAE and metric wrenches in my tool box, and avoid the adjustable variety whenever possible. "Use the right tool for the right job!!"
