Another engine driving the crankshaft? Think about it - no spark plugs and no compression. Otherwise this needs an extraordinary explanation.

I don't know I've never tried it...but seems they have everything plugged off except for one side of the engine, and I'm thinkin' that video is about as long as they dare run it...

In the 70's we "speed cut" 3 speed muncie Rock crushers. This involved removing every other tooth from the input and and every third tooth from the Speed gears. Then you didnt need a clutch to shift. Just a strong fast arm. A magnet from an old speaker in the bottom of the case to catch the debris. Garlitts taught me that one. We usually rebuilt these after each meet.

Oh, so it's like the GMC van I bought from the Chevy dealer here after some Nebraska travelers traded it in when it stopped working right. The dealer couldn't get it to pass emissions so they stickered it anyway. It had spark plugs on extenders, so the spark was back in a hole away from the cylinder. It could barely make it up the hills here. With new plugs and the extenders removed, it worked like it should.

I never have figured out how those things ever got made let alone anyone dumb enough to install them.

Thinking about it,this engine wears out in less than 500 revolutions.

If the average rpm is 7200,and the elapsed time is 3 seconds, then the engine turns approximately 360 revolutions, after which it has to be completely rebuilt.

This is taking all mechanical elements to the limit!

Yeah kinda' fun to try to think up improvements....man you could sure burn through some cash gettin' noplace fast...I didn't realize the spark plugs disintegrated like that and the clutch assembly is designed to weld itself together, 5 gal a sec fuel burn?, now I see why they only race for 1000ft these days...

I think the real reason for the 1000 ft instead of the 1/4 mile is the top speeds these things reach, and the fun of slowing them down from that.

When I was a kid I had a t shirt from Eddie Hill's four second run (4.99), somewhere around 285 mph in the 1/4 mile. That was in 1988!

And just for laughs, I think that was also around the time top fuel dragsters started to switch to direct drive instead of transmissions. I stand to be corrected on this, but believe the transmission primarily used before this was based on the (ancient) GM Powerglide!

They ran some 2 speeds for a while in the late 70s and 80s. Most of the time top fuelers have existed they were clutch only no trans of any kind until they decided to put reversers in them instead of hand pushing them back after the burn out. A part clled a clutch stick, a stick ti right length was put on the clutch to move the car arounf the pits. (I started working in drag racing in 1964, when the motor was in front and the rear end was the drivers butt draging the ground, stradeling the pumpkin.)

Tommy Ivo's "Videoliner"

"For those unfamiliar with the drive system used on the typical sidewinder style dragster, this is a good photo to study. The gentleman on the left with the light colored hair is Kent Fuller, who built this car (the "Magwinder"). Bolted to the engine is a clutch housing, not much different than on any car. As this is a high gear only dragster, there is no transmission, only a housing containing a short shaft that slides into the clutch on one end, and a small chain sprocket (actually, dual sprockets on this car) on the other end. Then there is the rear axle, which is usually a heavy wall steel tube with hubs on both ends, something for the wheels to bolt on to. And of course, the rear chain sprocket (or two sprockets in this case) are connected to the axle with flanges welded to the axle. The axle is held in place by a "pillow block" on both ends, which bolts to the dragster frame. The Pillow Blocks have stout axle bearings inside of them. It's actually a simple system. You might think of this set-up as a Go-Kart on steroids... "

Always awesome...

growing up on the farm... when K.I. Sawyer was still operational,... we would see fighter jets flying over our farm.

one time, in the 80’s, we were on the golf course, and (3) jet fighters flying under the radar?... flew right above us... They were huge. And where moving unbelievable slow...

the best time, B-52’s would also fly low right over our farm... we look out about 40 acres away, it’s a sight.
