HOW TO REDUCE THE NOICE LEVEL OF A GENERATOR?

11/12/2007 1:58 AM

DEAR ALL,

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW SOME IDEAS TO REDUCE NOICE LEVEL OF AN OLD GENERATOR. GENERATOR IS 200KVA AND 10 YEARS OLD ALREADY. ORIGINAL NOICE LEVEL IS 63 dBA AT 50Hz. CURRENT NOICE LEVEL IS 85dBA. I HAVE ALREADY TRIED TO FIX THE PARTS INSIDE ENGINE. COULD I ADJUST ANYTHING INSIDE THE GENERATOR FOR REDUCING NOICE?

I believe you are a quality engineer and all things are properly taking care of therefore: Let us try this simple analysis all of us know very well.

since efficency of running part of machine is with respect to time(10 years old).

Then if some machanical parts are not to be considerd to be replaced regarding to the design of the machine. I think is wise we reduce the load on the generator.

What kind of generator? Diesel engine? Aero engine?

Assuming it is a Diesel, maybe it is time for a new muffler? Have you done a sound survey to pinpoint the source of the noise?

Hitting the caps lock button will decrease the volume of CR4

Consider building a well ventilated enclosure

A new muffler [ see post #2 ]

rubber blocks between the fins on an air cooled motors will help

duct the exaust down will also help

This might help.

Fit anti-vibration mounts or rubber sheet under the rig, or at least under the ground contact points.

This will reduce some vibration, mostly structural sound. The real problem will not go away. Save for a new engine. Ky.

Ky,

I appreciate your comments, but the reason I posted "this may help" is because I am not in any way an expert with regards to noise suppresion but it is a subject that I am getting increasingly involved with in the systems that we build, do to recent H&S legislation in the UK. So maybe you could help me if you have experience here?

Most of the following should apply to the subject thread, so I do not think that I am digressing too much off topic.

As far as I am aware from experience, rotary machines do transmit a lot of noise through vibration and we have been generally succesfull in reducing this by isolating the pump (we build flushing/test rigs using triplex piston pumps) from the reservoir and system pipe-work by fitting flexible hoses, and mounting the motor/pump assy on AV mounts. We then realised that most of the remaining noise was coming from an air blast cooler driven by an e/motor which had not been mounted on AVM's and was hard piped, so we will now be isolating this source as per the triplex pump. This has yet to be tested.

The other main source of noise is from the pressure relief valve which (obviously) transmits increased volume in line with the pressure increase. I currently investigating the use of pilot operated (against direct acting) reliefs.

Finally, we may be obliged to fit acoustic covers, which then add to the problem of heat dissipation and further costs.

Any further advice would be appreciated.

Thx

Hi scot

Is your system in or out doors?

Ky,

The rigs we will be building currently are all for indoor use only.

The Schaeffer oil will reduct the amount of heat generated by about 20%.

"COULD I ADJUST ANYTHING INSIDE THE GENERATOR FOR REDUCING NOICE?"

There is no need to adjust anything inside, we've done this in our genset before by putting a soundproof enclosure around the unit.

Modifying the exhaust or muffler with a longer pipe that extends farther up may help reduce noise. Most of the new gen sets sold nowadays are already provided with sound proofing enclosures. You can view some models of these sets and get ideas on how this is done.

Try to change the piston ring with the "correct size" if you can find an approprate ones. Also the ball bearings if there is some on the engine.

KOTUU2 ,

10 years is preety long time , when you have IC engine driven generator working for long hours , I would suggest to go for over all engine over haul , most of moving parts like bearings ,valves , seals are nearing replacements , there is loss of power when on heavy load , check engine compression , and tune it well , place the whole unit on uniform rubber seating or any shock proof mounting , change the muffler with greater sound suppressing abilty .......thank you

Thanks all.

Generator is a diesel engine driven type. A new muffler was changed and tested again. its noise reduced to 4db. I am now trying to fit some acoustic covers sothat it can reduce noise more.

thks for your all advice,

kotuu2.

One way to reduce the noise is by using Schaeffer Manufacturing products (216-401-1845).

The combination of their oil and diesel treatment will reduce engine noise considerably. The fuel consumption will also be reduced by about 10%.

I am not a diesel mechanic, but using their "clean & cool" will clean the radiator, sleeves and waterways. It will also lubricate the water pump.

Good Luck!

In generator, there would be bearing on both side.Normally noise is comming from the bearing side because of deterioration of grease. So you can reduce the noise level upto certain only by re-greasing of the bearing. That you can check by acoustic emission analyser which is specially made for checking the grease level of the machine.

We have 2 Big generator near our houses , each one 1 MegWat . One working another standby, the generarors have sound proof but its'nt working well , Now our question how we can reduse the noise ,because it is affected on our living..

Best regards.

Assuming that these generators are not under your direct control, we will not be able to help you.

What you have to do is complain to the pollution control authorities/ civic authorities and (if possible) measure the noise level for substantiating our claim.
