Lets hope we stop this "arms race" with covid before it starts to get the upper hand.

We're in an arms race whether we like it or not. We just have to win.

The virus doesn't mutate to survive. The virus just mutates and the fittest mutants survive. Fortunately, covid-19 incorporates a genetic "proofreading mechanism" and is 4 times less likely to mutate than the flu virus.

What is more dangerous is when two types of viruses infect the same cell. The two viruses can swap genes, making an offspring that may be different enough to escape the body's immune system.

Evolution with the strongest and fittest that adapts the quickest,... survives.

Many, this username included, cannot afford the luxury of <...hope...>.

Actually, <...we...> have already started, with about 1% of the UK's population having been vaccinated to date, two of this user's family being among that number.

Unfortunately scientists still do not know if being sucessfully vaccinated prevents the subject from being a carrier. This is a question which needs to be answered urgently.

Clearly if yes, then an efficiency of 90% would reduce an R of 5 to 0.5 which would be fantastic. But, if no then vaccinated people would still need to follow all the rules or risk increasing the R number.
