Low Noise Steel

01/25/2021 1:44 PM

While I'm sure many of you are aware of low noise steel (radiation level), I became aware of it through an interesting site. Thought I would share. (Slinkies too!)

Interesting. Fortunately, we're now quite a few half-lives down the road and the problem has about disappeared.

One of the biggest effects of bomb testing concerns C14 radiocarbon dating. C14 in living creatures is in equilibrium with the environment when they are alive. When they die, the C14 decays, and the ratio of C14/C12 drops, indicating the amount of time since they were alive. The "bomb pulse" complicates this dating. Anything that died during this period would be dated later.

Atmospheric 14C, New Zealand and Austria. The New Zealand curve is representative for the Southern Hemisphere, the Austrian curve is representative for the Northern Hemisphere. Atmospheric nuclear weapon tests almost doubled the concentration of 14C in the Northern Hemisphere.[3]

I'm glad some of you liked it.

And SolarEagle, thank you for the nuclear update. It's interesting too.

Interesting... I knew that atomic bomb tests affect radiocarbon testing, I didn’t realize, or thought about what else it affected...
