One-Time-Use Video US/UK

11/26/2007 12:53 PM

Directions
Make home movies in 3 easy steps: 1. Simply point and record: Record up to 20 minutes.* Playback video with sound. Delete unwanted video segments. 2. Return to CVS Photo Center for DVD. Get your movies on DVD the same day with paid processing.** 3. Watch DVD on your TV. Bonus Feature: E-mail videos as easily as pictures. Send single video clips or combine multiple clips. Create and send video greetings. *Typical recording time approximately 20 minutes. Actual recording time may vary depending upon the nature of your movies. **DVD plays on most home computers and DVD players.

I've often been frustrated with the fact that the US and the UK have incompatible VHS formats. The costs and trouble one must go thru to convert are a pain in the @$$.

But I wonder about this one-time-use video. Once it is shot and transfered to DVD by the retail store that sells them, will I be able to send this to my British friends and simply have them able to play it in their DVD players and watch it on TV or on their PC? Anyone know?

Sorry, I don't know; but I will be watching this thread, since I have one also. I haven't taken it in for "processing" yet, because it isn't full, and I'm cheap!

Mostly pictures of a dolphin sniffing dog in Florida!

No, the dog learned that when he sniffs out dolphins, everybody praises him, so he has gotten very good at it. Not too surprising, given their sense of smell, and desire to please; but still way cool!

DVDs work on the MPEG2 format, which is an international standard format. The main reason why US DVDs cannot be played on a UK player & vice versa is because of regional coding (US: regional code 1, UK & Europe: regional code 2, if I remember correctly). If this device has no regional coding, then there should be no reason why it shouldn't be playable anywhere in the world.

Incorrect. The reason movies (vhs or dvd) won't play between countries is because of the video format. NTSC here in the US, PAL and/or SECAM in the rest of the world. As far as sending them via computer you should be fine.

I found my own info:

  • NORTH AMERICANS YOUR SYSTEM IS NTSC!!
  • For VHS you must have a VCR that can read NTSC. Most European decks are "multi-scan" and can read NTSC.
  • For DVD, 95% of the world's DVD players can read NTSC.

For our European friends...

  • For playing NTSC DVDs in Europe - all PAL DVD players output NTSC, and MOST PAL TVs will display NTSC with no problems.

So unless I'm missing something, I believe I can make my DVD with this one-time-use camera, and Britain should be able to play it.
