Broken Weld On Patio Chair

11/26/2007 2:27 PM

Has anyone repaired the weld on patio furniture? My wife had ordered these chairs online and one of the welds broke on the seat. I believe it is cast aluminum, but not sure. I have tried JBWeld, but it only holds for a short time (days) and will not support much weight. There are some products out there such as alumiweld and some adhesives from Devcon. I was wondering if anyone has experience with any of these products. I have read other sources that say welding cast aluminum is very tricky. The closest thing I have done to welding is soldering copper plumbing, so I would rather find a bonding agent if there is a good enough one out there. I appreciate any suggestions.

If those are recently purchased, the co should cover under warranty.

Those flimsy chairs are not good at all. Wooden furniture is "Slightly" expensive but worry free and lasts for long time.

I threw away mine and bought wooden and promised never to buy any decorative but useless garden furniture with welding of any kind at any price. I mean any price.

The chairs were probably produced in China or other country shipping inferior goods and hoping it gets by the radar. Let the wholesaler/retailer handle the grief, then maybe they will start providing better quality merchandise.

I have some good garden furniture that is over 50 years old. It is cast iron and heavy, but is still functional.

You may be right and I was thinking about that too but kept quiet as I did not want to offend any one.

It does not matter where they were made, they were made badly!!!

If the originator cannot handle that, he should stop making chairs immediately....

Don't worry about offending when poor quality is a problem....!

Have a great day Nadeem.

I sometimes feel it has been too long too, but house prices in Germany fell behind UK prices, so I am stuck here for most of the year!!!

Ah, da haben sie recht mein freund. House prices are stupid here but they will come down a bit again. I have no doubt though that they will never drop far again so the prices in Germany will have to come up before you can move again.

We treat our house as a part of our pension. As soon as darling daughter needs to go to uni, we move out into a narrow boat and the rest will be used for uni fees and pension compliments.

Sounds a plan to me, dunno how good a plan but albeit a plan nonetheless.

Try losing weight, its the sitting around that made you gain.

Aluminum is apt to be 25,000 psi or higher in strength. JB Weld is around 3000-4000psi I would guess. For it to hold, the entire area around the weld would have to be built up to around 6-8 times the original thickness, and the reinforced are should taper back from the crack site for something like 10 times the material thickness.

You could also reinforce the area with fiberglass cloth in epoxy. If you do this carefully, so the layers of cloth are tightly packed, with excess resin squeezed out, then this is about half as strong as aluminum, so if the repair is twice as thick, it should hold.

For a good weld, take it to a pro.

The correct answer for this thread is to throw away the chair and buy a new one and close this thread.

You can 'weld' cast aluminium with Durafix, it's more like aluminium brazing than welding but it would require a lot of heat input. If you have any painted finishes or attached plastic/fabric parts they are likely to be damaged.

I bought a small MIG outfit about a year ago and several different metal wires, I haven't tried using the Aluminium one yet, so I am almost "jealous" that you have a broken aluminum chair!!!

I have found out that small repairs around the house and garden can be quickly fixed with little brain power when you have a MIG setup.....before, I had to really plan carefully how....it probably is not really and truly financially viable, but my time is valuable to me....and its fun!!!!

Forget about welding aluminium with a SMALL MIG welder please. I had a 280Amp Esab pro and that was at the first tread of welders that can do it properly. The important word is properly. Aluminium is a sod for heat input and you need a massive excess of power to do it right.

This chair sounds like www. china material and was bought on e-bay or something so not more money than lets say $10 each. Throw it away and write of the loss as a well earned experience. Better than having to drive your wife or child to hospital because of some nasty injury.

No, actually it cost about $40 from an online patio furniture retailer although most likely from china ( God knows we don't actually "make" anything in the US anymore) and the table and other 6 chairs are very sturdy. I'm sure that it was just a bad joint. We did have another chair shipped for free from the company. The misses just wanted to try and salvage it to have an extra.

Thank you all for the suggestions, they are very helpful and informative. As I have no welding experience, I will most likely trash the chair.

NO do not trash, take it to a good welding shop and make sure they know Allu TIG welding first!!! Buy a spray can and touch up the weld afterwards, maybe $15 in all....therefore worth doing!!

Then you know where to go when the next one breaks......!

Thanks for the suggestions, I've found a local weld shop and will call them this week.

If they can manage to fix it for a reasonable price, I'll get some good points with the wife

THANKS GOODNESS, THIS THREAD CAME TO AN END.

I AM SO HAPPY.

For a 5 dollars chair we spent so many hours. My first response to this problem ultimately came out to be the correct solution.

Andy, why do you want him to spend another 15 dollars when he is trashing the chair?

Good bye guys.

Call for your darling daughter to pick up the small pieces and you the hunkman, pick up the big one and march down gracefully to the garbage dumpster and dump them. Or you can put the smaller pieces in the bag and put it in front of your home for twice a week garbage collection and put the big part of chair next to the dumpster. The city garbage collectors will haul them off for you and that will be that.

END OF DISCUSSION AND ALL WORRIES.

I will be ready for next big problem you might have. I pray that Almighty God keep you and yours safe from these kind of chairs and keep y'all in his care.

Yes, cut off all its remaining legs, turn it around so the seat gets the support of the wall and sit on it - you invented the "Squatting" chair.

Right on and the heating effects, especially if some wet rags are placed near to the work area will be minimal....

TIG welding will give the best repair, BUT, don't try it yourself unless you have experience with this method or are willing to learn. Practice on scrap pieces until you get the hang of it. Aluminum has a very narrow plastic range, so one second it is solid and the next second, your chair melts.

I had a friend in the UK 40 years ago, who built car bodies using alluminim sheet and welded them with a strip of cutoff ally and an Oxyacetylene burner....I saw him once weld a crack in a magnesium bell housing the same way.....4 of us stood around with extinguishers, not to put it out, we knew we couldn't, just to stop everything else catching fire in the barn!!!

I never got the hang of it for more than a minute at a time, then there was a hole.....

My wife had ordered these chairs online - Don't listen to all the guys telling you to throw the chair out. You do that and you have to sleep alone in the basement for over a month. Tie it with a rope and put all your books under it to support it and don't let any fat guy sit on it.
