Does anyone know where I can locate a DC Motor suitable for driving an underwater treadmill?

That's not the way treadmills work (by definition).

Why not register & explain?

Why do you even need an underwater treadmill? Is it even possible to jog underwater, or are you planning to set up a gym featuring water aerobics? Don't get me wrong; I'm not making fun of you. It's just that if you're setting up a water aerobics gym, then setting up a swimming school would be better. After all, weight training underwater will not be as effective as weight training on dry land since the far greater density of the water will provide some support for the weights.

The question you pose is impossible to answer.

A treadmill, by its very description, is driven by a person or animal actually stepping around in the circularly shaped "mill".

If you are serious about needing an answer, please re-formulate the question, along with a brief explanation of what you hope to do.....

Design it so that the motor and it associated control electronics are above the water and then they only need to be "Splash proof"......

Scan through www.ocean-news.com. News for the Ocean Industry. There are a number of manufactures of submersible equipment. Most use DC motors for stabilization or propulsion. Let me know if you need more.

Need to do a bit better than IP67 for this application.

I have seen shrimp studies using underwater rolling belts.

May I suggest you use one of two things. Either a drive belt with an above-water motor or use a pair of magnets, one on either side of the tank wall. That would work fine for small force driving. Remember that resistance is going to increase dramatically in water, and still goes up exponentially as the speed increases.

The application needs to be outlined a little. For example, what size "treadmill"?

A cheap solution is to use any non-waterproof electric motor suitable for your application (speed - torque), to put it in a non-magnetic sealed box and to transmit mechanical power through its wall with a permanent-magnets coupling.

And now for something completely different. How a bout a purely mechanical or an electromechanical device utilizing lake or ocean currents?

What....? Aquarium.....exercising fish?...nevermind.

I was looking for similar application. And no, I'm not going to post the my idea just to get a response.

In a practical sense your question is very straightforward. A treadmill doesn't need a 50HP motor. You gave us the general size motor you need. Anybody know where such a thing can be found or just want to make smart comments? In my searches I came across this site:

http://www.empiremagnetics.com/

But they appear to be a custom build shop.

Thanks to those that either provided information or kept their thoughts to themselves. Your responses are what makes a good board.
