Applications for Power Cables vs. PVC Insulated Cables

12/05/2007 6:49 AM

Dear Sir,

In electrical installation what are the applications where we must use power cables (600/1000 v governed by BS 6004) instead of normal PVC insulated cables (300 / 500 V ) to feed, 3 phase (400 V) or 1 phase(230 V) power distribution boards?

Asitha, I don't know what BS 6004 is. Can you tell me? I would like to read this standard. But in America the insulation must be rated for the voltage it carries.

The type of insulation will vary depending on the environment it is in. We use a series of "tables" to determine what our code requires.

Cu cables,

The 300/500 V cables are governed by BS 6004 or IEC 227 standards and 600/1000V cables are govened by BS 5467. Here I don't know why those standards give two voltages, such as 300/500 without giving one value. Does this mean 300 V corresponds to 1_ ph voltage & 500 corresponds to 3-ph voltage?
