Who are the Liars?

I think Joey is the only liar among the five names, and that the puzzle's originator (who is not HTRN) is lying about the number of liars.

This has been around on Reddit and elsewhere for a while, but some of the names have been inconsistently interchanged. I don't know whom to credit.

The names have been changed to protect the innocent. Maybe. I may be lying!

The only way I can see to attack this problem is to list the combinations and see which one is consistent with the statements, taking care to reverse for the assumed liars. There are 5!/(3!2!) = 10 combinations (pairs of liars).

Liars:

1 Jane, Julia

2 Jane, Joey

3 Jane, John

4 Jane, Jack

5 Julia, Joey

6 Julia, John

7 Julia, Jack

8 Joey, John

9 Joey Jack

10 John Jack

I think this is the right answer. I wrote a program to print out the statements for the 10 combinations.

Joey and John are the liars. Jane, Julia, and Jack are telling the truth.

Jane: Julia is only a liar if John is telling the truth. - TRUE

Julia: If Joey doesn't lie, then either Jane or John do. - TRUE

Joey: Jack lies, as does Jane or Julia. - LIE

John: If Julia is telling the truth, then Jane or Joey do as well. - LIE

Jack: If you round up Jane, Joey and John, you will have at least one liar. - TRUE

Everything that I say is a lie and that is the absolute truth!

The rest are telling the truth

Jack says out of the 3 names listed one is lying. That was a lie. Therefore those are the three that can not tell a lie...

If Joey tells the truth then his statement "Jack lies, as does Jane of Julia." Quite clearly states that Jack and Jane are the liars.

There was a misprint at Jane OR Julia.

Remarkably your source contains the same typo in two places:-

First: assume that Joey tells the truth, then Jack is a liar and Jane, Joey and John are truth tellers. The other statements all fall into line.

But the other possibility is that Joey lies: then Jack tells the truth, and, Julia's statement is true.

John cannot be telling the truth as we know that Julia is truthful (and that would make 4 truthtellers).

But if Jane tells the truth then all other statements fall into line.

So it looks as though Joey and John is another solution.

Construct a truth table and it all becomes clearer.
