Why is avalanche photodiode preferred for low light level applications?

04/08/2022 4:03 AM

Avalanche photodiode detectors (APD) have been and will continue to be employed in a wide range of applications, including laser range finders, data transfers, and photon correlation research.

i think that is only true for detection of rather short (maybe 20uSec or shorter ) pulses of light or light modulated at rather high frequncy.

do you have any good ideas?

Maybe, though the thread doesn't give much to go on.
