Plate Heat Exchanger leaking during hydrotest

06/04/2022 12:08 AM

Good day,

During a hydrotest for plate heat exchanger, we detect minor leaks on the tubes after 30 minutes from the start of the test. there was no drop in the pressure.

The test was done at 12 Bar, as per the data sheet from the manufacturer. while the operating pressure is 4 Bar.

the test was done as per schedule inspection plan.

is this leak can be ignored as there is no drop in the pressure.

Depends on the toxicity of the heat exchange fluids and the standard being met, as well as the requirements of the AHJ and insurance...and the location of the leaks...'minor leaks' is an undefined quantity, and drop in pressure does exist if leak exists, your measurement method may not be accurate enough to show it...I would suggest a detailed inspection of the exchanger should be performed and the reason for the leaking identified....If this is some degenerative process taking place, I would want to know what it is...and correct it if possible...so a history of test results should show if this is normal or if the exchanger is degrading....

Does it leak in service or just during testing? This doesn't sound like a serious leak to me...Yes heating and cooling can effect the seals....

What is the temperature of the fluids in the exchanger? Temperature increase will of course, make the leak worse. There may be an internal leak between plates that will reduce efficiency or cross contaminate the fluids used.

There should not be any leaks in a heat exchanger..this may a sign of a more serious failure.Pay a little now,or pay a lot later.

As SE said, check with your local inspector and the authority having jurisdiction.

On line advice will not be a defense in case of an accident or damage.

Just a thought... Is the water cold and the air humid? It could be condensation.

yes, It was cold water, and the weather hot.

where can I get standard for in-service inspection and maintenance for plate heat exchangers?

there is nothing with API codes.

To test the condensation theory, just repeat the test with warmer water and an air-conditioned (non-humid) atmosphere. The water temperature just needs to be above the dew point, which can be calculated from the relative humidity measured with a hygrometer.

Plates are a heavily maintenance form of heat exchanger.

this problem can occur a lot by a few reasons, a slight irregularity on the plate cause by mishandling, or irregularity on the gasket, etc.

We had a road crew that would lessen and reset the plates a couple of times. A real pain… each heat exchanger would have a personality per say like this.
