How do I find design and engineering work?

06/14/2022 11:43 PM

How do I find design and engineering work? I am based in the North West United States. Where does a freelance designer advertise? I can carry a big part of the engineering load. Design, FEA, CFD, simulation, blueprints, assembly instructions, cut sheets and molting/nesting, with some CAM included. Can I advertise here/how? I'm looking for contract work and am very familiar with NDAs and NCAs. Any ideas?

From your question it sounds like your experience is a recent graduate?…

Is that true?

Kind of. I did not go to engineering school. I am not a bona fide engineer. More like an engineering assistant. Like the paralegal is to the lawyer. I'm older and can't afford engineering school but came up from the floor. My experience is real world, building, maintaining and repairing all types of machinery including buildings (arguably the largest machines we make). The first reply looks very promising. Thanks for the feedback.

Without an engineering degree or license it will be tough, if not impossible for you to freelance. You probably cannot get insurance for your engineering designs.

The installations that you assisted an engineer in design work might consider you for maintenance work but new designs are not likely.

On that direction… to a degree,… That’s what bankruptcy is for.

worked at a company that hired the engineering work to a company that consisted of a engineer with a P.E. in Mechanical engineering. He (his company) would hire drafters and designers. But his products, with his stamp on the drawings would immediately failed at the SAT (SITE ACCEPTANCE TEST) no FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) was done, the FAT would have been at the company where I worked, the SAT was done at the customers site… and it would fail quite dangerously.

he’d than declare bankruptcy, a judge would discharge his debt, and he’d start another company.

he's just fortunate that so far no one got hurt.

Maybe the OP could work for that Mechanical engineer. Is he hiring?

Good point. My work always gets a stamp. I've never wondered about their credibility. Thank you.

I'm not trying to engineer buildings or be "the" engineer at all. Most of my experience is with machinery. Some with buildings. And yes, I am looking to help improve existing designs. No lofty goals here. Not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything like that. Just willing and able to pick up some of the tedious work for those whose time can be better spent.

Upwork. Fiverr. Those are probably the two biggest freelancer networks that I know of.

You can advertise in the dedicated space in the general forum. May not be the best place for it.

Advertising what your capabilities are, is very different from the actual work done as experienced and proven by an employer.

School bulletin boards are available that occasionally may probe to be helpful in your quest..

I would say that you have to start working for someone else who has an established business, not so small that they can't take on another hand nor so large that you will get lost in the crowd.

Learn their business thoroughly and work hard and take on as much work as possible. Eventually, you will establish a reputation and business contacts and can branch out with your own business.

If this doesn't work, try being born into a rich family.

I concur and agree with Mr. Rixter's approach..

You to need to actually show, demonstrate your capabilities and be proven and recognized by a third party like an employer as well as by others, including yourself.

Then starting your own contracting company may be a lot easier as you already may have developed the needed contacts, work recognition and capability reputation..
