Beadboard Ceiling

12/10/2007 6:44 AM

Hey everyone, long time. I am working on my kitchen and finally got the cabinets in and the floor down, and the granite comes this week. PHEW~!!!! I have a question....Can I use Power Grab and some brads to apply bead-board to the ceiling. I got the stack painted and would hate to think I can`t do it....whats your take on Power-Grab?..........................Silver

Reckon it'll do the job OK. Get it right first time, though!

Guess if I don`t I`ll have a real mess on my hands huh? I just wanted to make sure that this was the proper way to use the Power-Grab. Do I have to trowel it first or just smoosh it up there?.................Silver

Hello, First time poster to the board. Just a quick thought about power grab, I am not sure what you are attaching to but beware that if you are going onto existing plaster or sheetrock, the bond is only as strong as the weakest link there, i.e. the paint, paper, plaster.

You should probably get a couple of nails into the joists to hold up the boards, Unless you are gluing to the joists directly.

If Power Grab is anything like Liquid Nails it comes in caulk tubes ready to use. A zig-zag

1/4" bead or two, or more depending on size of bead board and you should be good to go!

Push it into place pull off and let excess solvent evaporate. The fasten securely in place for the adhesive to dry.

Hi Sterling! Long time. I have put up 2 sheets and had the help once again from the ex, but the a-- didn`t line up the beads before I started nailing, and this is after the Power Grab was applied. So now I have to deal with useing trim on the ceiling. I had my 15 yr old and my ex helping, so disaster was in the works from the git-go. Now I have to figure out how to get the next board right and lined up, which is going to be nearly impossible. But I guess I should have seen it coming. DARN!!!!.......Silver

Are you using 4 x 8 sheets of beadboard ply or are you using 3.5 inch +or- strips of beadboard? You can always rip it down and start over. We call that a learning experience.

'Bead-board' -wossat?

The usual practice with plasterboard is to use special woodscrews to attach the stuff to the underside of the ceiling joists. A battery drill, set to a low torque setting, is the tool to use to secure it. Does this help?

A T-shaped prop the height of the ceiling is a handy piece of kit to dodge together to help do this task.

Ya know PW, I was going to make a "T" to help with the process but it took too much time for the ex to wait for, so we just held it up with our hands. I should have just done it-and-done it right the first time. Now I pay the price for a messed up ceiling. ................................................Silver

If you have the old "popcorn" texture on the existing ceiling, I would recommend either removing that first. It's not too difficult. Should be able to rent the equipment at home center. Also, if it's already smooth, but painted with a gloss finish, you need to use a drywall sanding pad on a pole to rough the finish a little, first. But, by all means, check for squareness, and snap a chalk line before installing the first sheet or strip (depending on the type of beadboard you are using. Prep work done properly will save youi a ton of headaches in the end. The tongue and groove strips are good, and would probably be best for not having too much weight pulling down till it dries. A finish nailer and air compressor are your best bet for this. Good luck.

Using a long level, knock some nails in to beams in the ceiling every foot, exactly level and proud at least 1/4 " from ceiling. Rows smaller than the boards, use double rows where the boards will meets so you have nails for both.

Tip, find lowest point of ceiling first, start there!

Smear the glue over all the nail heads as thick as you like, press the boards up and hold till glue sets....glue for one board at a time....do not forget a row for the outside edge..

Problem solved.
