"Green" Falling Star?

12/10/2007 5:20 PM

Last Monday night, I was driving to Laredo from Houston, Texas. At about 10:30 pm, I pulled over about halfway between the South Texas towns of "George West" and "Freer." Where I stopped was in the middle of miles and miles of gently rolling ranch land covered with scrub brush and cacti. After zipping up, I looked at the clear night sky and it was dark enough and clear enough to make out the path of the Milky Way. Anyway, as I was looking up and facing south-southwest, I saw a falling star that flashed fairly bright. I spotted it about 40 degrees up and the apparent length of its descending path was maybe a bit longer than the distance between the tip of my thumb and the tip of my index finger extended fully away from my face. This, in itself, is hardly worth mentioning (several years ago I saw hundreds of shooting stars during a Leonids event). The unusual thing about this one was that it finished bright green...like a traffic light. There were no habitations in the area, no sign of camps, no sounds, no lights of cars, no aircraft...as far as I could teel, nothing but empty sky and uninhabited land for miles, perhaps. I thought that maybe it was a piece of satellite debris with maybe some copper content. Any suggestions?

There are so many posts i did not read them all. Anybody suggest the obvious of space debris? Many exotic metals will burn Green at the right temps.

Isn't it lovely, it is 14th December and the Geminids should be lighting up the skies but we have a thick cloud pack here for the second day. That is this years oportunity gone for Geminids watching.

Should have some more on the tail end of it all but other than that it is waiting till 3/4 January for the Quantrantids which are even more productive with up to about 100 per zenith hour.

I hope others here can have a look at the Geminids for me.

Would you settle watching the picture of a Gemini? (I am born on June 5th)

"I'd like to aim my gun at those streetlights."

There's an easier way than that! Get yourself one of those really powerful lanterns, and point it at the top of the light. There's a light detector at the top of the lamp that turns the lights on and off depending on the ambient light. The lantern makes 'em think it's daylight and "poof," they turn off.

You silly vermin, what do you do then with the great big lantern you are holding in your hand?

Pfft, I don't know.

Anyway, where did you get my shooting reference to street lights from? It is not in the post you reply to! Must be way up towards the top but I cannot find it anymore???

Green falling stars,

two turtle doves,

and a partridge in a pear tree.

Ya know, what the heck is that partridge in a pear tree thing all about?! I mean, who ever said "I'd like a partridge for Christmas, but not just a partridge, it must be in a pear tree!" So, like, a long time ago, partridge watching was something to do, but you wanted the bird in a fruit tree, just in case you got a little hungry during the event?

Would this be like someone today saying, "I want a Corvette for Christmas, but it must be in a redwood tree, in case I feel like building a deck or something." I'm totally lost here.

I have twice seen brillient green falling stars. One in Orlando Florida, the other in Woodland Hills, California. I just decided to do a search on green falling stars to see what is know about them. I'll read on, and hopefully learn something useful.

Yesterday morning, I observed a blueish green streak across the Phoenix Arizona sky. I assume it was a meteorite/shooting star. The "head" was very large and had a very long teal colored streak about half a mile long, in my estimate as it headed over the South Mountains coming from the North.

Hello vermin

Just to advise the green cylinders are from Saturn.

The red octagonal ones are from Mars.

We need to closely monitor these greenish shooting stars. Though many explanations have been advanced and many theories proffered, the fact remains...they remain UFOs. Be vigilant!

Thats all right then!

That is, as long as they are merely unidentified flying objects....we just don't know what they are, and not unidentified flying objects, with that that special meaning of objects that actually means, 'we think it's aliens!'

Hello texlex and other earnest seekers after truth, which really "Is Out There".

While it is interesting to have "mysteries", as an Engineering Forum we should endeavour to solve these "mysteries" which are presented in the CR4 Forum.

It is in the nature of Engineers to show the correct reasoning at all times, along with proof of that reasoning, and that is what I propose to do now, with what up till the present, appears to be a "mystery".

I believe I have discovered many of the reasons for the supposed "Green Falling Star" sightings.

Many years ago, back in the late 1940's we used to listen to the "Wireless", or "Steam Radio", if there was not a power cut at the time.

They had a regular event on the local Radio Station, 3ZB, every Saturday night, called the "Hit Parade".

There was a popular song in those days, which explains the phenomenon of the "Falling Green Stars" syndrome.

I have researched for many weeks, the subject of this Topic Thread, and managed to locate a webpage, complete with embedded player, to play this song, which brings back such memories of yesteryear.

It is evident that over time, many of the objects remained where they were placed, waiting for a small seismic event, tornado, or other disturbance to set a train of events in motion.

It is noticeable that most observers of the "Green Falling Stars" have been driving a motor vehicle at night, with the headlights on, or otherwise moving near a streetlight.

Please remember to play the tune, on the embedded player), that you, gentle readers, may understand the mystery of the "Green Falling Star" has been discovered, and finally the mystery is no more.

Sorry about that, I got so enthusiastic in putting this explanatory Post, that I nearly forgot to list the webpage so here it is, http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/t050.html

Enjoy.

Kind Regards....

Re: "Green" Falling Star?

Um, that was exactly as helpful as socks for ducks...although, I should qualify that the song took longer to load than I had to spare. Had I been able to listen to it, I may have been convinced.

For my money, though, a kiddie song with a more compelling connection would be "Froggie Went a Court'n." I can put a kid to sleep with my extended version of that song in 15 minutes or less guaranteed. In fact, now that I think of it, I may change the ending to involve a green frog streaking across the sky finale, in lieu of the "big old goose came and gobbled 'em up" ending. My 5-year-old recently advised that she would like the song better if the whole wedding party didn't end up as the goose's dinner.

Hello texlex

I see the part guitar in your Avatar, and know you play the guitar whilst singing to your 5-year-old.

I have managed to obtain one of your early recordings, a 45 RPM one, as there was only a single track on each side

Our 5 year old granddaughter enjoys listening to your recording, every time she visits us.

Kind Regards....

It's comforting to note that there has now been sufficient confirmation that certain types of falling space debris will occasionally flare green and that it was not necessarily a figment of my imagination. I was pretty sure that the cactus I was nibbling had not had time to influence my observations.

Hello texlex

It's not so much the cactus but the mushroom that give strange results.

Refer: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - I often wonder what the writer was on at the time.

Kind Regards....

Actually, if the cactus is Lophophora williamsii (peyote) variety, it can hold its own with any mushroom...in my limited...um...academic experience.

Many have speculated about what influenced Lewis Carroll (e.g., opiates, cocaine, and mushrooms were all potentially available)...and we've all heard this:

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

Fom the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane

The thing I never mentioned in my first post was that it was large whatever it was and broke into multiple pieces as it fell. The tails from all three off the objects when it broke apart were also green and you could tell they where tumbling. Not that anyone cares. :)

It's been 3 years since I saw the green falling star and started this thread. Since then, enough people have reported similar observations that it would appear to be a real, if relatively uncommon, phenomena deserving of some scholarly inquiry. Some grad student somewhere, at least, should address it in a thesis and publish it. Of course, such person(s) should post significant news re the effort in this thread. Any takers?

Did it appear to be headed south-southwest? It looks like Mercedes, TX, is about 120-130 miles due south of where I was when I saw it. If so, we could each have seen falling debris from a common source. Anybody have any contacts within an agency that watches that part of the sky?

Early this morning about 5 am, I was laying in bed and saw a flash of white that lit up the whole sky and then I saw a "falling star" that was bright green the size of a green traffic light as you say and then it disappeared over the horizon. I live in Encinitas, CA. It was amazing to see and I am not sure what exactly it was.
