New Fusion Concept

03/03/2023 4:54 PM

..."An innovative nuclear fusion technology that uses no radioactive materials and is calculated capable of “powering the planet for more than 100,000 years”, has been successfully piloted by a US-Japanese team of researchers.

California-based TAE Technologies, working with Japan’s National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), have completed first tests of a hydrogen-boron fuel cycle in magnetically-confined plasma, which could generate cleaner, lower cost energy that that produced by the more common deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion process.

“This experiment offers us a wealth of data to work with and shows that hydrogen-boron has a place in utility-scale fusion power. We know we can solve the physics challenge at hand and deliver a transformational new form of carbon-free energy to the world that relies on this non-radioactive, abundant fuel,” said Michl Binderbauer, CEO of TAE Technologies."...

..."“Most fusion efforts around the world are focused on combining DT hydrogen isotopes to use as fuel, and the donut-shaped tokamak machines commonly used are limited to DT fuel. Unlike those efforts, [our] design uses an advanced accelerator beam-driven field-reversed configuration that is versatile, and can accommodate all available fusion fuel cycles.”

This fuel-agnostic reactor design, which features a sensor able to detect helium nuclei alpha particles– the only emissions from H2-boron fusion, is expected to make it possible for TAE to license its technology “on the way to its ultimate goal” of connecting the first hydrogen-boron fusion power plant to the grid in the 2030s."....

A lot of bold claims here, and in only 7 years...I'll remain cautiously optimistic....

Not so optimistic paper published in Nature Communications....

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of bold claims usually means they are looking for more funding.

“powering the planet for more than 100,000 years“

Kinda short sighted, innit?

Interesting bit of research. However, as the Nature Communications paper points out, thermonuclear fusion with these elements occurs at temperatures 30 time higher than with deuterium-tritium reactions. Getting to a net Q>1 (power production threshold) with this fusion product will be much more difficult. Still, research always brings knowledge. Sometimes that knowledge is nope, that's not going to work.

Blazing new trails into the unknown is how progress happens.

A piece of great news indeed!

Perhaps this exemplifies theory of Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny by Robert Wright, which argues that biological evolution and cultural evolution are shaped and directed first and foremost by "non-zero-sumness" i.e., the prospect of creating new interactions that are not zero-sum

Cleaner but with much higher ignition temperature. Fusion has been demonstrated, but it's a long way from breakeven. Fast-forward to 5:40.

Seemed to me that they didn't really say a lot. Lots of energy in with magnetic confinement and a particle accelerator. But they didn't say how much out. Not yet peer-reviewed. I didn't see where they said what reaction was involved except H to B, but both have many isotopes. We need more info.

HB11 Energy is doing something similar, Hydrogen-Boron 11 fusion, not by plasma confinement but by a non-thermal approach of accelerating protons (hydrogen nuclei) into a stationary boron target, resulting in 3 He++ particles. This technique sidesteps the problems of extremely high temperature plasma confinement and the inefficiencies of thermal conversion.

"The science behind HB11 Energy’s solution

HB11 Energy’s approach has been the topic of a developing field of research pioneered by Prof. Heinrich Hora. Click here for the list of our scientific papers.

HB11’s concept is radically different to all current commercial fusion approaches and will not share any of the major challenges that have held back DT (deuterium and tritium) fusion. As it is also drastically simpler we expect that scientific development will be cheaper and much faster than other fusion approaches.

From a scientific standpoint, the few experiments that have been performed on HB11 laser fusion have demonstrated landmark results and have placed HB11’s approach as the most likely candidate to realise safe, practical and economically viable energy generation."

Somebody, somewhere, using some combination of isotopes will eventually crack this nut and bring fusion power to light. (Sorry, but I couldn't avoid that pun.) I don't expect the process will be completely benign but until this comes out of a laboratory environment most of the headaches will probably not be known.
