12/11/2007 4:15 AM

Gallium Indium Tin eutectic (other name: galinstan)wets glass. How to avoid this wetting, so that the glass remains clear?

Substitute a different material with a different surface tension. Mercury, for instance?

No, definitely no !!! : Using mercury instead of galinstan is NOT the good idea: on the contrary, as mercury is toxic (and particularly its organic compounds: cf Minemata, Japan..), the challenge is to replace mercury by galinstan...

A vapour deposited coating on the glass may help.

I am guessing you are making thermometers or manometers and don't want to use plastic tubes.

Parylene coatings are quite tin and will go inside small cavities.

You are right !!! I am interested in manometers. So, I have to investigate in coatings. Thanks.

Just coat the glass tube with Galium oxide. (this is used in thermometers)

Use a little very low viscosity oil... Like ethyl alcohol.

Ethyl alcohol is not be the solution:I need a liquid with density over 2, and vapor pressure very very low (under 10 mbar...)
