Calibration for PSV Mounted on CO2 Gas Cylinders

02/21/2024 11:05 PM

Good morning, how you are? hope you are doing very well. I have query regarding calibration of PSV mounted on CO2 Gas Cylinders. We did a pneumatic test at the set pressure of 140 bar, and the test failed. the PSV was serviced and cleaned but again failed in the test.

inlet dia is 10 mm. the test machine minimum orific dia is 22 mm.

However, if we test by water, which is different than the service medium, the test is passed.

can you support in find out the reason behind this failure?

Regards,

Sounds like your gas gauge may be slightly out of calibration...raise the pressure of the gas a bit and it should pop off....

Assuming the abbreviation <...PSV...> means "pressure sustaining valve" or "pressure safety valve", what are the implications of a <...failed test...>; the sorts of questions to ask within the facility are:

  • How does this particular valve compare with others that may be present at the facility? What is different about this one compared to others?
  • Is it worth having a replacement new spare on standby? What is the lead time on its arrival?
  • Is it worth sending the valve in question away for specialist refurbishment and return?
  • What is the impact of operating the process at a different pressure, or not operating the process at all?
  • Is the test itself valid or would a different protocol be appropriate?

Does the method of test deliver more force on the sensing element due to the mass of the test media?

Does the incompressibility of the test fluid somehow deliver more actuating force to the sensing element?

"can you support in find out the reason behind this failure?"

Pneumatic pressure testing is different than hydrostatic pressure testing is the reasoning for the different results....

Gas is compressible while the liquid media is not compressible... you may increase the gas pressure to match and equalize the pressure exerted by the liquid...

If the PSV is non-adjustable, replace it. A potential for failing is why testing is required.

Works with liquid but doesn't work with gas...hmmm.

There are PSVs for liquids and PSVs for gases. There are PSVs for specific types of gases. Maybe you have the wrong type of PSV.

Just a thought.
