Why Don't Advertisers Understand How to Present Filters?

04/28/2024 10:35 AM

Sorry this is just a gripe. Our vacuum jug has stopped holding heat, so I'm replacing it.

I expected to be able to click on size to filter for the capacity I require:

Huh! Can't post pictures again. On the site I was on I did a search for vacuum flasks. Then clicked on the "size" filter: it gives me a choice of 14cm, 22cm, 29cm or 30cm.

Who the heck wants to filter on the height of the flask?

This is just one example of advertisers not understanding what a customer is likely to want to know about what they're selling: often dimensions (when they are important) are missing altogether.

When people sell things surely they should think: "If I was buying this, what would I want to know?"

Another gripe on Ebay (may not be the same in the US): when people are selling large things "for collection only", why don't they include the area location in the headline so that you don't have to open up the page to find out that it's 100 miles away.

"Who the heck wants to filter on the height of the flask?"

Maybe people with a limited choice of shelf space.

My own gripe for online selling platforms is when I filter, say, "men's watches," I get all sorts of things (albeit related to watches). Things like replacement straps, watch batteries, women's watches, etc.

I mean, did I ask to see these things? All I want to see is men's watches, why would you show me a woman's watch? or replacement straps? Or wall clocks?

End of last year my washing machine died &, needing another quickly, I ordered on-line from a store not too far away that had one in stock. The search engines now think I must be collecting washing machines.

They ought to be targeting people who haven't recently bought a washing machine!

I had a similar experience a few years back after buying a ladder.

"They ought to be targeting people who haven't recently bought a washing machine!"

I suspect that would be a lot of people.

I appreciate that of course, that's the reason for the !. But obviously the people who have just bought a washing machine are the least likely to want another soon. It would be a more sensible strategy for stuff purchased regularly, eg toothpaste.

A favorite gripe of mine as well.

Or you're trying to find points and condensers for an old car and now you get all these HVAC advertisements.

Not so much artificial intelligence; more like artificial stupidity.

I have had similar experiences with online retailers of industrial parts.

Although they seem to be getting better, it is often the most important parameter for my application which is missing from their filter list.

Some parts do not have all the newly added parameters, so are not shown in the filters.

And don’t get me started on the 12v 12V 12 v 12 V 12vdc, etc, etc range needed to see one option.

Something tells me the programmers have not been given a suitable remit for their data entry front end.
