This weekend, instead f sitting around doing nothing; go to your lawn, garden or yard open the water hose and put your thumb over the water exit end and watch and observe to what happens when you do this.
1. The water is restricted by your thumb.
2. The pressure inside the hose is increased;
3. While the flow of water inside is decreased the velocity of the water at the point of contact (aperture) with your thumb is increased.
And there you have it, any questions; pick-up a good physics book and check out Bernoullis law or Venturis law.

Read up on a guy called Bernoulli. You may have heard of his equations and these will explain the relationship between pressure and velocity of a fluid.
Good answer...add Venturi to that. Also he should check-out some good books on Orifice plates, valve sizing, and the whole gamut on instrumentation and control.
