Depleting Oxygen?

12/11/2007 8:23 AM

The increase in the emission of greenhouse gases has it's notorious effects debated widely. One of those worth mentioning again is Carbon-Dioxide, where one carbon binds two oxygens to form a free floating molecule into the atmosphere. Plants may use is to a degree of their ability to release back the oxygen into further consumption, but the degree of CO2 emission from human environment may vastly surpass that of plants ability to decompose it.

Is this possibly leading to a global depletion of oxygen?

Yes, though in percentage terms the effect is miniscule in comparison with CO2 changes. O2 is about 19%. CO2 is about 0.038%.

There are also emitters of CO2 that do not depend on the consumption of atmospheric oxygen to form the CO2 molecule. Volcanoes, for instance:

CaCO3(limestone) + heat → CaO + CO2↑ (no decrease in oxygen there).

The relationships between sources and sinks are complex, and most mathematical modellers of atmospheric changes highlight degrees of uncertainty with their models.

Even most weather forecasters can't see more than a fortnight ahead with any accuracy!

Your weather prognosticators are much better than those in Cleveland. They are lucky to get accuracy beyond 36 hours.

I doubt that any of them are asked to or are qualified to predict O2 levels.

A weather man on a date...

"So, I here you're in communications."

"Ahh, no. I'm an undertaker."

"An undertaker? Hmmm. I'm sure I heard you were in communications... Something about local news?"

"Nope. I just handle dead bodies all day... Suck out the blood and pump in the formaldehyde."

"Whew! That's a relief! I was beginning to think you might be a weather man."

Is it displacing, transposing or is it accumulating?
