Radio Programs from the 1940s Received on Modern Equipment

05/18/2024 7:55 AM

I remember hearing about radio and TV programs from the 1930's being heard and seen in the 1960's, and no terrestrial source could be found.

It was as if they were being reflected or re-transmitted from an outside source.

Scientists at the time said it was due to signals being trapped in the ionosphere and bouncing around for years until they finally escaped from a crack in the "mirror".

I found this hard to believe and still do.

I have not heard anything about it recently.

Has anyone else heard about this?

Any opinions on this?

I'm with you. It sounds like a tall tale. The energy would be long dissipated by now. Someone could have a recording that they transmitted, possibly as a joke.

There is a very remote possibility that they are being sent back to us by an alien civilization that is 15 light years away.

The chances that those signals sent out in the '30s or '40s with no focusing mechanism had enough energy to reach a detector 15 lightyears away are very close to zero. The chances that the receiving entity would have equipment to detect AM radio signals of the correct frequency is pretty low. The chances that the receiving entity would have equipment to re-transmit AM radio signals at the correct frequency is pretty low. The chances that it would occur to the receiving entity to re-transmit them with sufficient energy in the correct direction to reach Earth 15 years later (The Earth and the entire solar system have been moving during those 30 years) are also pretty close to zero.

Probabilities multiply!

In summary, NOPE! It didn't happen.

I agree,it is very unlikely, but nothing is entirely zero.

Some jokester alien may be playing mind games with us,like teasing a cat with a laser beam.It may be playing back old radio shows just for fun.I know there must be other species that have pranksters.Even orangutans have a sense of humor. One was picking the lock on his cage, letting out all the other primates, and getting back in his cage and watching the fun as the zoo keepers scrambled to get all the other ones back in their cages. The zoo keepers could not figure out how they were all escaping so they put cameras in the cages. They saw the orangutan(named Fu Man Chu) opening the doors, but they still did not know how the orangutan was picking the locks. They searched the entire cage. They finally found it:A piece of folded and bent wire hidden in his lower lip.Go figure.

Lol! The Orang here in SF back when I was a kid, picked the lock on his cage regularly, got out, and charmed the neighborhood. He kept the hairpin in his mouth like a seasoned criminal.

I can pick a lock, but only my locksmith neighbor a few blocks away can do that too. Orangutan means "man of the forest". I say the emphasis should be on "man".

I can pick a guitar, pick a mouth harp, pick a fiddle, if I lost my bow, pick a shirt and pants(before I was married) and when I was a kid,I could pick my nose,I could even nit pick, but I could never pick a lock.Smart man of the forest.

The orangutans are super strong, and one was caught unscrewing the nuts that held his cage together, and they were tightened with a wrench. They were re-tightened again, this time very tight, and he still could loosen them with his fingers. They had to use a thread locker to prevent him from disassembling his cage.

A German friend of mine is named Horst, which also means "man of the forest". I'll have to tell him about the other "man of the forest" someday. Curiously,he has red hair...hmmm.

I think it is very conceited of mankind to think they are the only intelligent creatures on Earth.Consider the octopus that can unscrew jar lids, without any training, and certain fish recognize themselves in a mirror, and elephants have been observed burying their young dead..Have you seen the paintings done by elephants?Amazing!.

I am reminded of someone describing the earth as that planet practically glowing with RF signals... I've never been really comfortable with drawing so much attention to ourselves..

"Contact", starring Jodie Foster. Fabulous film/movie.
