Best Glue to Hold in Marine Environment

08/12/2024 12:08 AM

I am looking for a "Super-type" glue that can be used on metal, plastic or wood, in a marine environment. Super Glue, Gorilla Glue and H66 have not worked well enough. Anything out there that I can try?

You’re asking for a lot.

i worked in the ship yard, where they were looking to make the ship lighter to change a steel pilot house to aluminum. The problem is to fasten aluminum to steel.

there was a sample, that had glued a piece of aluminum to Steel, the finished sample was about 3 “ x 3” x 3”

holding this piece in you hand was like holding a gyroscope in your hand… it was a weird feeling.

i wish i could remember the type of adhesive they used…because it also had to be a insulated barrier to keep the galvanic reactions occurring.

But the various material your asking for is quite a challenge.

good luck.

It would be useful to the forum to have a couple of paragraphs about the detail of the application, perhaps?

1/4" Delrin pad glued to a 2" wide steel flat bar . . . is one application.

It's tempting to suggest an epoxy resin:

Delrin is one of the more difficult materials to bond, the surface is inherently slippery. At the very least you will need to acid etch or abrade the surface to get a good key but the result is still not likely to be good unless it is reinforced mechanically.

Amazon has a selection or marine rated glue. What ever is used in marine grade plywood is very effective. As @PW Slack mentioned, "the specific application is important".

I would try a polyurethane type glue.

A few years back, scientists developed a glue that was a copy of barnacle adhesive that can bond to everything. It was to be used in all type environments, even dental fillings.Boiling plywood joined with this glue did not affect it.It used soybean meal as the protein base,if I remember correctly.

I cannot remember the name but at the time I inquired about it was not being sold to consumers.

It would be worth your time to Google this type glue and see if it is available to consumers yet.

Here is a link to get you started in your search:

What about marine-grade epoxy?

Once again, I didn't finish my thought here.

From my experience, all instant glues are great for quickly holding something in place. They can even last a long time but only if no changes happen in the forces the glue must resist. Marine conditions will create forces that dramatically change over time. An instant glue can hold an object in place while marine epoxy cures. I wouldn't expect this to work for a butt joint bonding of a mast for a sailboat.

The local friendly Chandler might be able to suggest something. That's the value of the over-the-counter shop.

It's NetMaker. Welcome back!

You probably already know about this stuff, most marine people do. I'll post it anyway just in case you don't. The people at Eclectic Products https://eclecticproducts.com/product/e6000-industrial-adhesive/ make several different glues. Your requirements are pretty tough, but the various products from these guys are worth a look.

I found some 2 part adhesive called water putty that worked well for my application. It was a mix together by kneading and it dried solid hard.

My note about the water putty wasn't too clear, sorry. The product I used was an actual putty, and you had to knead it to a neutral color to mix the two parts together. Then you had a bit of shape forming time before it hardened.

There is a wet area adhesive available in Aus known as "Fulloprene 360" that comes in a caulking tube.

Suitable for porous and smooth materials. Never tried it with the "super slippery" plastics like ABS.

Solvent for cleanup is toluene or similar once set, though turps seems to work for wet material. Only a few minutes air time before skin forms, but large beads release fresh material as items are placed.

Bond strength seems to be at least as good as CA, as it will remove skin if you stick fingers together.

Yes, I did use some in the past. Didn't stick fingers together, but got some "spill" onto one finger.

Best approach was simply to leave it for three days till the skin layers naturally shed.

Maybe it was the 303 version someone else has mentioned.

Pretty potent stuff.:

https://www.hbfuller.com.au/products/adhesives/fulaprene-303-adhesive-sealant/

Read SDS:

https://www.hbfuller.com.au/media/1875/fulaprene-303-adhesive-sealant-sds.pdf

UHMW and most High density polys do not bond well to anything, but if heated almost to the melting point, the molecules expand and adhesives will be accepted into the mix.I have been successful with cyanoacrylate adhesives using this method but you must work fast and keep flames away from the work.

Since you're considering 'over-the-counter' adhesives, may I suggest 3M 5200 Fast Cure? It's a polyurethane adhesive/sealant.

The Fast Cure version requires about a full day to cure. The standard version requires over a week.

This isn’t my strong suite..

I believe there a difference between adhesive and bonding absents.

my understanding is adhesive is a surface to surface ‘glue’. And the strength is based on the adhesive itself as well a the adherence to the base material.

While bonding is more penetrating on a molecule level.

My brother in law is a long time marine carpenter. We fixed an aluminum John Boat using West Systems Epoxy.

Here is a link. They have marine specific stuff for you to look at.
