Your question is totally ambiguous, you need to be far more exact in your reasoning and reasons for needing 4 wires, a quick answer has already been added by Knabe, it could have easily been a lot worse from any of us! He held himself back as it is Sunday here maybe...... Otherwise we will all feel you are asking us for joke answers - and you will get plenty!!!

Switch brain on first, describe complete circumstances (mechanical , electrical & electronic) as best you can, with possible examples if you have any and we will try and help.

If you do your best, we will try to emulate your effort in our own.

You will probably need to use the photocell to actuate a relay.

Please post more details of your requirements: voltage, load, specific app.

He probably had an existing photocell like it. Most likely had a two wires for power, one wire for sinking output, and one for sourcing.

WHY??

A photocell has no need for more than two wires UNLESS it is a combination light source (Like LED) and photodetector. Two wires for each half. If you need to find a replacement part, and can get us a part number of the dead device, we can certain help. If this is a design you are doing from scratch, we definitely need more information.
