Rising Coke And Iron Ore Price

12/21/2007 6:29 AM

With the volatile price of coke and iron ore in India, what is the future of Blast furnace iron making in India? The mini BFs are consuming lot of Coke and it has become very much energy consuming area.

What are the solutions we have to save mini BFs? Can you give the techno economics of mini BF iron makings?

Can any body explain why the iron ore fines price has gone much high and in Bellary area it has gone more than the price of lump ore recently!!

It may be a matter of the demand exceeding the supply.

Exactly.

On another point, I am curious to learn from the poster what the coke rate requirements are for mini-BF operations. Smaller BF units in the US were typically running at ~1100-1300 lbs coke/NT Hot Metal when I was involved with coke-making and BF technology.

The coke consumption in mini Bfs are a bit higher .It may be about 600Kg/THM in India .The iron ores have high Al 2O3 and this causes a problem.Very less number of mini BFs use oxygen injection and sinter(rather the prepared burden). They do not have raw material blending yards too.

Many cases the capital investment is a problem

According to the status of iron ore availability in India ,the alternate way of using raw material of iron ore in the form of sinter or pellet used in blast furnace and there is also a reason behind this that the grade of iron ore goes to be decreases .

The sinter & pellet also consumes fines along with enhance the Fe%.By using this automatically coke rate will be decreases.

There is also a big reason to consumption of coke is the most of the operation person of MBF using burden depend upon mass balance but I think if we use thermally balanced burden, then it can be reduced coke rate.
