Expansion between gas pipe

12/24/2007 7:20 AM

Hello,

I would like to ask about thermal calculation between gas carring pipe.

Normally we fixed expansion bellow in horizontal pipe.

My few specifications are as under:

Pipe carry: B.F.gases for burning (from Blast furnace to Burner)

Pipe dia: 1500 mm (Spiral welded M.S.pipe)

Temp.: 40 deg.C.

Length of pipe : 25 Mtrs Horizontal & 35 Mtrs.Verical.

Please suggest me location for Expansion bellow on this pipe line.

Thermal Expansion (inch) = Length of pipe (ft) x Linear thermal expansion of mild steel (inch/100 ft)

Linear Thermal Expansion of mild steel can be easily found from a material tables by knowing the temperature changes (min. & max.).

Gland packed Telescopic Joint is your answer.

Wrap Graphited Asbestos rope--or even manilla/Hemp say 10x10mm and you should get leakproof expansion joint. Your total movement will be less than 5 mm --ever

Joints where?;

One on the Horizontal leg---middle of the run rigidly anchored-with 2 telescoping in/out dia 1500.

On the Vertical Run -- One, right near top delivery. Rest allowed to expand/contract in non-anchored Tower support in which it can expand/contract loose.

Hope not being suggested for use in USA, given use of Asbestos Rope. Would a Kevlar product work?

Cotton/Manilla/Polyester/Nylon all will do.Kevlar--so expensive! Smear Graphited Grease.

After you calculate the expansion based on Mr.Abdel Halim Galala go to Venn/ Ayvaz site and download their Expansion Bellow spec sheet indicating installation. There you will find formulas to calculate Fixed & Sliding guides for both horizontal & vertical installation. Follow it.
