Go to www.tier-2-innovation.com and down load the free circuit simulation program (the evaluation version) and the 10 electronic circuit kit tutorials. They help you quickly learn the simulation program. You can experiment with all kinds of circuits without having to have a work bench, soldering iron, power supplies, an oscilloscope or physical components. This should be a big help in understanding circuit symbols and schematics.

Hi Scott,

I read your query... I am using AutoCAD Electrical 06/07and 08. AutoCAD Electrical is really useful to improve your knowledge regarding automation/electrical.

At the time of using it... you use google... for queries of electrical/automation components

Regards,

Donald

Dear Scott,

I've been an automotive Tech for 16 years and just recently graduated from ITT Tech for Computer Electronics and Engineering. Basic electrical engineering books can be Googled from anywhere, including your library. First, being an automotive technician, basic books can be purchased through Snap-On or possibly other tool or manual distributors which come to your shop, like Mitchell-on-demand or Chilton's (check them all on-line too). Snap-on also has basic classes available. Check to see if these are available in your area and if your employer can help with the funding. Most will. The accompanying books are yours to keep. But, Some of the books I have received from ITT are listed below:

Fundamentals of Electronics DC Circuits - by David L. Terrell / Delmar Publishing

Fundamentals of Electronics AC Circuits - by David L. Terrell / Delmar Publishing

Fundamentals of Analog Circuits 2nd Ed. - by David Buchla / Pearson and Prentice Hall

Electronics Devices 6th Ed. - Thomas L. Floyd / Prentice Hall

There are several others, but these should get you started, especially the first two.

Autocad Electrical is good for designing electrical circuits and Autodesk has oodles of CAD programs. I'd go to their site to see if they have any books. But, the help file should be all you'd really need.

PDF links. One very good one is www.playhookey.com. Also, white papers are available from National Instruments (they have a great electrical program called Multisim. check that out too!), Texas Instruments, National Semiconductor, etc. Most are more in-depth, but there are also some pdf's on basic electrical theory as well. Although it takes some searching. Just register and log on! The Globalspec toolbar is my most-used asset and should be yours as well.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!!! -Robert

<....wondering if any one could recommend any books or pdf links with a good basis to learn the basics...>

The local reference library is a good start and, in the UK, it usually won't cost anything to borrow them for short periods as a registered library user.

Secondhand book shops can be a most entertaining way of obtaining all sorts of things on all sorts of subjects. Imagine the joy of finding an unused copy of Kempe's Engineers' Year Book 1988 in a charity bookshop for £3GBP!

I was looking for an EE book that everyday joes could understand and picked up electrical engineering 101 by ashby. It is the first EE book I've found that is fun to read. It has given me a much better understanding about electronics in general.
