250k=Ω, (137)=CTS code, (6009)=?, (35)=week#, (96)=year...?

Hello Guest Jim,

You need to advise which type of circuit it is in.

  1. Audio Volume = logarithmic = Log
  2. Bass or treble = semi-logarithmic = Semi-log
  3. Balance = Linear.
  4. Voltage control in digital circuit = Linear.
  5. Carbon track
  6. Metallised track
  7. Wire-wound
  8. High voltage circuit - The pot is normally at the chassis or earthed end of the circuit, and may have an insulated shaft.
  9. Valve (Electron Tube)
  10. Transistor
  11. Integrated Circuit
  12. Control of loudspeaker - logarithmic wire-wound
  13. Power Control = Industrial situation

Advise further preferably with a digital photo of the pot and another photo picture clearly showing the markings.

If you can advise the actual equipment the pot is installed in that would be helpful, and some of us may consult the old reference books, which we still have tucked away, just in case....:

  1. Make
  2. Model
  3. Serial #

Life was simple when all pots were made in UK/Europe/US, because there were only about 15 major makers, and these old codes were quite logical.

If the pot is causing a problem, open the back, (prise off the tabs if you have to), squirt in some Isopropyl Alcohol, CRC contact cleaner or Servisol Spray, then rotate several times the pot, end to end, close the pot case up, and you normally have another 10 years life.

If you need to know the resistance curve of a pot, fix a piece of paper to the shaft, marked in degrees, take careful readings on an ohm meter, onto a separate piece of graph paper write the readings, as you rotate and stop, every 5 degrees of rotation.

Draw the curve through your marked readings, and match it.

If you need a replacement in a big hurry (remembering Christmas Holidays) contact:

http://www.potentiometers.com/?gclid=CIaWg9KDxZACFSdZiAodtDW9Og

They can look up your code, and have records of codes from earlier major pot makers, and may send you one off-the-shelf item, or make especially for you.

Warning if your pot application is in the Fire or Alarm industry, or in other than purely domestic situation, some Jurisdictions and Regulations require the replacement part to be part-numbered, and from the original Manufacturer.

In that type of situation, say a Fire Alarm Circuit, and a house or building burnt down, after your use of a non-specified part, and the non-specified part was located afterwards, may cause an unhelpful Insurance Company to say the Policy was invalidated by a non-standard part being used.

In a military situation: A Military coded part must be used.

Advise further as needed..............

Hello Andy,

I normally "Work the Night Shift at CR4" while you folks are asleep.

Do you remember "Nightbeat" - which used to start the serialised radio show dating back to the 1950's with: "My name's Randy Stone, I cover the Nightbeat for the Daily"?

Hope you had a Great Christmas Day, with Family and Friends.

Cheers....
