You can't:-

Exept for maybe the simplest of 'integrated ciruit' like a 7805 voltage regulator (which only has 3 legs) might reveal something about it's health with a multimeter test...

Or maybe an opto-isolator... which is little more than an LED and a phototransistor.

What is generally accepted as an IC e.g at least 8 legs isn't going to be testable with a multimeter.

If you really want to try, maybe a simple ohms check across the supply pins may reveal any completely blown chip?

You can't test an IC using a Multimeter only but you can build a basic IC tester

Well, there is a way but it's tedious.

Decades ago, I read an article in a magazine (can't remember which). You take a good IC and read the resistances from the ground pin to the other pins. Then you read the resistances from the V+ pin to the other pins. What you get is a table of resistances for a good IC.

If you have a suspect IC, all you do is read all the resistances and compare them to the table that you have for that IC. A difference of, say 5%, makes it suspect.

Works fine for ICs with 8 pins, it gets a little involved with 14 to 16 pins, and downright time consuming with 40 pin microprocessors! However, I did amass a file for about 40 ICs back then. This soon gave way to testing using logic probes and oscilloscopes. That file went into the dustbin eventually.

Lay the little sucker on the bench. Smack it real hard with the multimeter. Yep, it's bad.

Dear Friend,

I do know the best tools available for the testing and measurement and for the maintainance of the motor for lifelong period. I have my firm for the transformer repair and winding in maharashtra.

Rishabh Instruments, a nasik based company, i suppose, is the worlds leading manufacturer of the Analog panel meters and it is also engaged in manufacturing of the digital instruments for easing the daily tasks of people like us.

Now i have herd that they are representing Gossen Metrawatt of Germany and METREL of Slovenia for the marketing and servicing of the same in India.

I have found the websites of all the three companies and i am glad to tell you they are:

www.rishabh.co.in

www.gossenmetrawatt.com

www.metrel.si

I have bought the multimeter from this company and i was amazed with the performance of the same. Rishabh provides a very wonderful after sales service for all its instruments and now i came to know why they claim "German Quality products at Indian prices". Isnt that wonderful. I have ccordinated with a lady there at marketing@rishabh-instruments.com and spoke to her on 02532202160 when i had purchased the meter.

Have a nice time...
