Is it OK if Cat6 cable connected to RJ45 sockets?

01/03/2008 11:10 PM

Fellas,

Far as I know RJ45 is suitable for CAT5 or CAT5e twisted cable. Is it ok for CAT6 cable?

thanks&regards.

Yes. Basically the same as CAT5e (same purpose) but better specs.

Are you using RJ45 connectors because you cannot get Cat6? It should work.

If you use Cat6 cable because you cannot get RJ45, it will work but you will be limited to Cat6 speeds and length restrictions.

The issue is what performance you want from your link. If you want Category 6 performance then ALL components of the link must meet that standard including patch panels, cables and connectors. There are Category 6 versions of RJ45 connectors available which must be used to get Category 6 performance. Your can physical connect lower rated RJ45 connectors, but they will downgrade link performance.

I looked into this for a think tank build. What I read was in theory CAT 6 is twice the efficiency of CAT 5. However, if any component in the chain is less than CAT 6, the system drops to whatever the "choke piont is. IE. patch cord, connectors, or punchdown board.
