cable test

01/05/2008 3:15 PM

Hi all , After we finish the installation of power cables and distribution panel boards , and we energized the system and it's running OK. the consultant keeps asking about the cables test and grounding test,

what I need here : what type of cable test he needs , of course all cables should give you infinity megger test ,so is it logic to make a table of all cables and write beside every cable that the test result is infinity ??is this what he needs??

can anybody help me to make table for cables test including all necessary test required because I can't go to him and ask for this format after the project has been finished.

regards

Hi Friend!

Hope this helps..

After an installation of this nature, a safety certificate is posted that certifies that there are no Hot-Spots...

This is tested with an IR Meter (degress ºK) ; it checks for loose connections, bad welds (when using certain typs of welded connectors), proper selection of cables, entry and exit thru conduit and panels.

Check with them to see if what they want in actuality is a CERTIFICATE or STATEMENT signed and numbered (registered); some insurance policies require them.

thnx Mr Ronald 4 ur reply , realy my situation as a senior engineer has some restrictions in my dealing with the consultant , it's not easy to tell him after this big project finished that I don't know, so 4 the meantime I need an example of tables for testing with some figures as an example .

what he asked exactly is the following : ( to provide certificate that the power supply network and installation complies with the product and production specifications acceptable for the gov rules , including relevant test results concerning safety and security ) this is his phrase.

regards.

I'll check with an engineer friend of mine. Meanwhile, the gentlemen and women in this forum might have a quicker response, then follow with them.

Check with the gov for the gov rules. Possibly they will refer you to US or other overseas govt spec/std? U.S. Milspec would probably be good source. Or maybe I'm not understanding your dilemma correctly?

I think the certification should be issued by THIRD PARTY which's appointed by government. THIRD PARTY will do all necessary testings described by our fellas here. It's the same as here, yearly the electrical installation must be reinspected by THIRD PARTY prior to certificate. Then we can legally operate the facilities.

Here, the inspector must have approval by government. Me is one of them.

Sorry could not find anything, but here's what I do for a living as a writer of SOP's and scripts for Validation of MedicalDevices.

Prepare a Matrix add:

· Objective, Scope, Purpose,

· InfraRed Thermography Images submitted along with each connection inspected.

· Due diligence, Test to be performed,

· Documentation (ie. Drawings, schematics, procedures,

· Deliverables (Licenses, certificates, FS, MS, URS, Permits, etc)

· Methodology

· Equipment to be used (must be certified, calibrated) to include certificates as deliverables.

· Persons involved, responsible parties, Licensed and knowledgeable Engineers and techs sign-off.

· A space for sign-offs

· Responsible parties

· Acceptance criteria

· Acceptance signatures

· A final report

If possible meet and sit with them and interview with them and ask what type of report they need. A letter? A report? It does not hurt to ask!

*Not necessarily in this order

Remember: If it 's not written somewhere, it didn't happen...so write-up your own, it's better than nothing and this is acceptable.

Also; Remember " Who, What, When, Where, How, and sometimes Why!"

I could go on and on but I know you get the idea!

PS. I don't do SOP's for electrical Inspections, these are merely suggestions for a tarting point, juggle things around for yours and their liking.

Check out the electrical code in your area!

See what they state as regulatory, guidelines, directives, standards, GEP's... etc.

Your project should have a specification book along with the prints, as part of the bid documents. Those specs should describe the specific tests or protocols to be run. It sounds to me that he may be looking for a megohm test on the cables th verify insulationto ground. And an ohm rating on each of your system ground rods or plates.

This should require isolation of the cables, 1 at a time, and testing with a megger. This is usually done before pulling the cables, and may have been intended to be done by the cable manufacturer or supplier, along with certifications prior to shipment. If that is the case and you submitted cable data to the engineer prior to release of the cables, you may have some shelter, but if the cables were "certified" prior to shipment, the cable identification tags should have been kept to allow verification that the certified cables were the ones installed. You could be liable to replace the cables with certified sets, and could be liable for down-time of an operating facility, or for delay if the jub has not been turned over yet.

Good Luck.

There may be many heads in cable test report. But for a field installation report, following should contain..

1. Cable brief specification , like type, material, size, insulation etc

2. Use..power, control, motor application.

3. IR value.

4. HV test (this being a destructivetest ask mfg if this is required at site)

5. Termination information.

6. Cable tag no, route code

7. milivolt drop test at cable termination.

In addition to the above provide manufacturer test report.

Hope your consultant will be happy.

As NoSciFi said, you should have a spec list of what the consultant expected to be performed as part of acceptance testing.

Many projects require HiPot testing of cables, especially the high voltage lines. If this is part of the specs then the engineer is looking for leakage current values. I've seen quite a few times where a scuffed cable will have 20,000MΩ+ on a megger at 5000v and flat out fail a HiPot test.

If the consultant is after ground tests he/she is typically either wanting specific GFI testing or, if this is a new facility, in fact might be wanting ground (soil) resistance tests to ensure safety.

Take a look at this reference page from Biddle...you might find it helpful.

The electrical installation contractor is responsible for issuing a test certificate for all works carried out on industrial and commercial premises in the UK by law. Some domestic premises' alterations and certainly all new domestic installations will also require a test certificate to comply with current Building Regulations. These are maintained by the local authority's inspection office and their inspection and documentation schedule in respect of the works.

Is this the sort of thing that will satisfy the consultant? If so, simply demand the correct test record documentation from the installation contractor prior to paying the invoice.
