Order Your Robo-Guitar

01/09/2008 3:42 PM

We had an earlier discussion on this, and today I received an email saying "Order A Gibson that Tunes Itself." I am not going to do so, but it would be great fun to have one. $2199.

Be nice for some one that plays several guitars tuned to different keys. Could get rid of the extras. Tune the one on the fly.

I am looking to buy a Les Paul, but it will not be the robo guitar. I do like the self tuning feature, I don't care for all the rest of the digital stuff...

If they did robo tuning, and regular pickups/electronics I might go for it..

That would be my preference too, though I haven't really researched the digital. It would take awhile to get used to not manually tuning though!

Before I got a roboguitar, I would rather go for a Kevin Ryan bevel-fluted acoustic. See at http://www.ryanguitars.com/theguitars/Ordering/Bevel%20Flutes/Bevel%20Flutes.htm

Now I'm wondering if a DIY robo guitar/stringed instrument tuner is possible (would be great for my 54-string hammered dulcimer).

Regards,

Mike

I rather stupidly didn't read the headline, and was wondering how an acoustic guitar could be auto-tuned.

If you're going to allow the machine to deprive you of a skill, why not go the whole hog, and allow it to auto -play the tune itself.

Then the next stage is to dispense with the guitar altogether, and use a cheap MP3 player.

Kind Regards....

And in my case I'd be listening to much better playing to boot... for a fraction of the price!

Hi Sparkstation,

Being somewhat of a mechatronics enthusiast AND a guitar player, the idea of this type of autotuning is quite intriguing to me. While I do believe that technology can, in many ways, diminish creativity, the usefulness of this advancement does not necessarily have to be so. There have been several times playing in worship that I have noticed something discordant/wrong, only to find that one of MY strings went out-of-tune! If I had had "robo-tuning" it would have been taken care of immediately!

Sometimes I use alternate tunings - not really viable in the middle of a "set". This could be handled easily and quickly by the "robo-tuner".

As for electronics playing the song for you... NOT! I just get into it too much!

Just something to ponder!

Mike

I am with you Mikerho, having the auto tune feature would be very nice especially when playing alternate tuninings.

Hi Steve,

I'm just wondering about the collectability of these things. Gibson says there will be a limited run of special editions.

What are your thoughts?

Really, guitars are not that great an investment... Look at a really classic Les Paul and maybe it runs $12,000. I think the most expensive guitar I have come across was an old (late fifties vintage) Fender that they had at Guitar center for $25000... I saw a 1930's vintage Gibson acoustic on "Antiques Road Show" and they estimated it at $5000.

So buying this guy for $2500, even if it is a limited run for now is not going to make you a bunch of money, unless you can get a really famous rock star to use it and sign it, or unless you hold it for a very very long time.

Buy it because you love it, not for an investment. I can't say I am in love with this robo model. This one however I have at least a lust for:

Yeah. Guess you're right. Just buy it because you just GOTTA' have it.

Or you can build your own like these. Actually, I built an acoustic from these folks. Came out looking nice. Tone wasn't all that great though.

Surely you don't mean one of these?

Oh no! In fact I tried the game one time and did very poorly at it. I'll stick with the real thing.

Check this out :

http://www.kritz.be/

Go to the section "Guitars", then "R&D"

The "4everNeck" guitars, once tuned, stay tuned a long time.
