Hi Guest, Since work at a BioMed company as a Validation Specialist I have learned many things and one is the method used in that company.

Most are protected by Patent Law and especially my company; by an Oath of Non Disclosure. Therefore it is not correct for me or anyone to do so.

Although, I can direct you to a site in Google that will help you to better understand this methodology...

With that said:

Re radioopaque coatings on PU for catheters, vascular members, etc, we make a series of both aromatic and aliphatic TPUs at various hardness, and we make both series with barium sulfate added to the polyurethane at the time of synthesis. Therefore, the barium is integral throughout the polymer, and the TPUs are used for extrusions, injection molding and so forth. We also make the same range of TPUs without barium sulfate. We typically make TPUs with 10, 20 or 30 % added barium. It is much more efficient and safe to incorporate the barium throughout the TPU, rather than to try to add a coating after extrusion or molding. Coatings can be done, but the barium will dilute the adhesion of the coating, and one can suffer coating failures when the catheter, etc is inside the body. Our TPUs, as well as most of our hydrophilic etc polyurethanes, are bio-durable and bio-stable, much more durable and resistant to hydrolysis or metal ion oxidation than are common polyether or polyester PUs, as we use special polycarbonate polyols for our soft segment polyols. If you wish to reply to this, I will give you contact information. My posiiton is as senior polymer scientist for the corporation.

Don't confuse Barium Sulfide (BaS) with Barium Sulfate (BaSO4). Sulfide will kill the patient, Sulfate won't.
