Source of Mysterious Antimatter Found

From the article:

"In 1978, gamma ray detectors flown on balloons detected a type of gamma ray emerging from space that is known to be emitted when electrons collide with positrons — meaning there was antimatter in space."

How in the world do they detect different types of gamma rays, and how can they determine the origin of said rays? Where are references to scientific documents?

So violent forces give rise to energetic particles...predictable, but good to know there's some observational evidence to assist in making the case for it. I await further developments with barely concealable anticipation.

This truly amazes me. I mean I don't know how this evidence missed me.
