Old records converted to CD

01/17/2008 9:12 AM

Hi there, every one reading this:

Some times ago, I read about the device which plays the old 33, 45 and 78 RPM records and you can make CDs to preserve the old songs on the CD or hook it up to the computer to burn the CDs. The cost was about 125 dollars. I saved it but now I can not find where I saved it? Would someone please help me to find that device as I am interested in purchasing it. I even do not remember the name but this much that it was discussed in the forum.

Regards;

Nadeem,

Do you currently have a record player/turntable to play the records on?

Depending upon the signal level, you may be able to take the turntable's output and port it direrctly into your computer's sound card. Otherwise, you will need to pass the turntable output through a preamplifier before feeding it to your PC.

If you don't currently have a turntable, you can pick a suitable one up from Radio Shack (with a built-in pre-amp) for $70.00 (but without 78 RPM capability). RadioShack Catalog # 42-7012.

Possibly more interesting would be a USB turntable, that you can order from ThinkGeek for $100.00

(http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/mp3/90a0/).

This unit would output directly into a USB port on your PC, so you would not need to deal with your sound card's "line in" jack. In addition, via included software, this turntable can handle 78 RPM records as well as 33 1/3 & 45.

I'm sure that there are other similar products available to address your need...

===================================================================

Just my $0.02...

Thanks, JMAN:

I do not have the turn table yet. I was thinking the device mentioned had the turn table and all the ports to hook up to the computer. That is the reason I did not buy any of the turn table. The one I had was a simple 33 1/3 and 45 RPM only.

I shall read the link you sent. I have a budget of about 200 dollars to spend on this complete device.

I shall write to you after I read the link.

Thanks.

Nadeem

JMAN:

I read the link and it looks good.

I will check out with them and see the shipment etc.

I do not have any 78 records, just33 1/3 and 45 RPM. They are sitting in the boxes in a cool and dry place for so many years and I like to save them.

I hope the operation is simple as I am a bonafide computer illiterate when it comes to these gadgets, iPOD, MP3 and cell telephone etc. I like simple things with simple operations. I request 18 year to change the time in my car as I can not do it although he has tried to explain to me many times and I say, son, you are here, so please do it. It is only twice a year or if the mechanic has to take the battery off to work on my car.

Thanks for the help. Last time during the discussions many people brought many models but this is as good as the others and withing my budget.

Regards;

A good answer and I rated it as such.

On a similar issue, do you have any thoughts for getting the best sound conversion for an old cylinder type grammaphone? The best I have been able to do is th put a computer input microphone into the reproducer bell of the grammaphone and recording the output. Necessarily the sound is scratchy, but it works. I would like to find out if there is a way to better transcribe the original sound as I have 38 such cylinders from the early 1900's.

These days you can find the turntables and cd burner packages everywhere. Even Target & Walmart carry them.

Go to http://www.target.com and do a search for record player. You'll see lots of options.

Well how about some thing a little different?

You can download the music from the internet. Since you have the original albums of the music that you want, downloading the songs shouldn't be a problem with the RIAA or those copyright guys.

There are many P2P applications out there.

I personally recommend ares or bearshare.

Good luck !

Shaz:

That would have been good if they were English songs. These albums and 45s are from different countries and in different languages that I enjoyed then and still do. If they were only English songs, I would have done so as you indicated.

In this case I have buy the device to convert. Now that I have the idea from y'all, I will go to the sites and find out. Or may go to Walmart as suggested to find out what is avaiable locally without going to mail order. Mail order will be my second choice.

Thanks for the suggestion and will download my favorite English songs.

Thanks and with regards;

Hi

Well to tell you the truth, there are people like you other there who enjoy that exact type of music in the language you are speaking off. So you should give it a try to download that song. It's very possible that you may find that said song on P2P networks or you may even get a free copy to download some where online (try Google :))

Also there are something called torrents (you said you weren't all that computer friendly :P) where you may get the entire album to download.

I have allot of cassettes with music i love and i managed to download then instead of hooking up my player to the 'line in' connection in the computer. Not to mention the quality would not have been all that good because of dust and stretches in the tape :(.

Regarding the machine shown in #4, My wife gave me that particular one for Christmas. It was extremely easy to set up, requires minimal knowledge (You do have to know where the power button and USB ports are on your PC.) This is an awesome piece of equipment and does a fantastic job. I have burned CD's of 78 RPM records recorded in 1924 and 1928. This machine has 2 speeds 33 and 45, but will copy 78's using the enclosed software. It also solves the problem of output levels being higher or lower than can be optimally adjusted by most Audio boards.

I would recommend this product to anyone with old tunes and new technology.

Nice to hear from you, Andy.

As I said this question was asked before and I saved it for future reference and to purchase when I needed to buy. But I could not find where I saved it.

With the help of you all, now I have the information how to do it and in process I saved some money too as $99.99 plus shipping and handling is way below the expected budget. Thank you all.

I like to personally thank, JMAN, Dvader, Scotchdrinker, Sahz, Techart, Agua Doc and last but not least, you Andy for the info. Please do not mind if I do not write to you all separately but feelings of thanks are sincere for all of you.

Now that I have all the info, I would request y'all to not to naswer this thread and let us close this thread and we all go to some more interesting threads and hopefully we all shall meet there.

Once again thank you and May God bless you y'all.

Regards;

Nadeem Butt

Nadeem-

I have been thinking about doing the same thing. Could you report back to us and let us know how the project works out?

Thanks,

Bill Morrow

Hello bmorrow492:

Yes, I shall. I had in mind to let every one know just like when I had problem with my US new stamps panes stuck together. I called upon you all and I got good advice to steam out or put them in slightly warm water and they came apart and were safe and I reported back to all of the kind people who responded to my cry for help.

I have to order the device today and should be here in about 9 days and then I will go home to Houston to try as I am in Shreveport, Louisiana refinery on an assignment and make Houston my home. I must be able to report back by first week of February.

Regards;
