Do you really think you have provided enough detail for a meaningful answer?
I suggest you add more information.

Well, let's see. Millions and millions of years ago the earth was a very, very hot place. During this time deposits of minerals ....... ore deposits.......miners.......smelting.....and then into a furnace.....through a roller......high pressure.....and the output is a metal rod or shaft which is cooled and cleaned.

There is a little detail I left out in the middle for times sake but I think you get the idea.

you aren't asking about machining are you? Cause that is a whole 'nother story

Check your knowledge. This is not complete. Your question is extremely B-R-O-A-D. Mabe you ought to elaborate on what the steel shaft is for.

Mine ore.

Mine coal.

Mine limestone.

Mine chromium.

Mine Molybdenum.

COnvert coal to coke.

Smelt chrome and moly into ferro alloys.

Invest in steelworks.

Convert iron ore into iron in blast furnace using coke and limestone.

Convert iron hot metal into steel in Basic Oxygen furnace.

Add ferroalloys upon tap and refine in Ladle furnace.

Continuosly cast into blooms identify to assure composition identity is tracked.

Reheat blooms.

Roll into bars.

Anneal bars.

Descale.

Cold draw.

Straighten.

Stress relieve.

Rust prevent.

Bundle.

Tag.

Inventory.

Machine.

Austenitize.

QUench.

Temper.

Restraighten.

Grind bearing surfaces.

Rust preserve.

PAckage.

Label.

Add to computer inventory.

Ship.

Invoice.

Recieve payment.

CAsh cheque.

Pay Taxes.

PAy employees.

PAy suppliers.

Repeat.

Nothing to difficult,really.

Just fill in the details.

I'm sure you'll do fine.

Tell who ever asked you the question that they have given you a fools errand by failing to provide sufficient details.

What kind of shaft?

Cam shaft? Crankshaft? Power take off shaft? Transmission shaft? Half shaft?

Drill shaft? Elevator shaft? (Just kidding, an elevator shaft isn't made with 4140, its made out of air held in place by reinforced mass on the outside, much as a sweater is a bunch of holes held together with yarn arranged into a specific pattern.)

LIMITING THE SCOPE OF THE QUESTION WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A MUCH TIDIER AND MORE HELPFUL ANSWER.

How much abuse will you accecpt?

When is your homework due?

The person (teacher?) who asked this question and gave you such limited information is clearly an idiot.

Make the two ends, then the middle then weld the three parts together.
Or roll it. Or if it's slender enough draw it... then you can photocopy it

4140 would not be ny choice for a welded shaft.

it may be too long to photocopy.

no numbers here, thus no engineering.

Hi guest.

The answer you are looking for should be in your study material.

If you can't find it - type the material and post it here. In the process you may also pick up valuable knowledge.

Do yourselves a favour and Google for - 4140 steel - and view whatever you get, have a look at the properties - your answer is there. - I would ask you to post your answer and score for comments.

In my earlier post, nitriding would take place right after machining and be part of the waustenitize step before quenching.
