Two Legged Dog Video

04/18/2006 2:00 PM

Ok, I just saw this video of a two legged dog and I have some SEVERE engineering questions. One major one is about how the T-Rex needed this long tail to balance to run on 2 legs, think of how they had to change all the skeletons and models recently. How can this dog move in the same exact manner that they used to think the T-Rex did without the tail mass? Also they said that the vets said that her hips are fine, but isn't this mode of locomotion putting 2 times the stress on the bone and tissue, as well as introducing stress in places the "system" wasn't designed to handle.
I'll admit that I'm amazed either way.

Biped Dogs

We had a poodle when I was a child. It was very proficient in walking on two legs while standing upright. It was a good size dog of 40 lbs. It would use this ability when in tall grass to spot rabbits or whatever small game it was intent on chasing. Poodles must have a different hip structure than most dogs as this ability is a common trait of the breed.

Must be why they use poodles for that in the circus. I wonder what they were bred for? I don't think they were hunting dogs.

Poodles are indeed hunting dogs, specifically they are water fowl retrievers. The unusual trimming of their coats is to keep joints warm as they swim.

Well now I have one more answer that will astound people in trivia pursuit. =)
Never would have guessed them as hunting dogs. Especially not bird dogs.

Two-legged dogs

That dog is truly amazing! I recall seeing a blurb on one of the national TV news shows quite awhile back about a dog that lost two legs on the same side of its body. I'll leave out the details of how a sickle mower was involved, to make the story a little shorter, but after being treated for the amputations, the dog learned to run on the two remaining legs within several weeks.

I wonder if in-line running is easier than bipedal movement. Off hand I'd say in-line just because of weight displacement.

I would rather ride a motorcycle than a Segway, and I've noticed that people who want to strap wheels to their feet usually use in-line skates. I'm wondering if the dog, "Faith," is evolution in the making??? Maybe ten thousand years from now all dogs will walk around like humans like they do now in comics and cartoons. :-)

As long as it's not the cats first. After they can open tuna cans we are all disposable.
