Captive Power Plant

At our factory, we have a need to set up a captive power plant since grid power is not reliable.The available options are "gas turbine" or "steam turbine" driven generator. On the basis of economics, which is a better option, and why? Can someone advise?

You need some one to run an economic analysis for the application. Factors to review are $/btu gas cost, $/btu steam cost, capital cost for gas turbine plant, capital cost for steam plant, power plant operating efficiencies, and hours of operation per year. I would guess if you have excess steam capacity or using waste to fuel your boilers, steam will be the economic winner. If you're in an area where gas is plentiful, the gas turbine will come out ahead. For the dollars involved, it would be worth having an energy consultant review and run the numbers.

This is further to rieds comments are you producing steam in your plant if the answer is yes then Mr.Reid is right if you are not producing steam, then you can concider gas turbine if you have gas avilable cheap.you can go for combined cycle co-generation which has its own advantages in $terms

1)Can anyone forward list of some energy consultants,specialised in the field of power plant (Gas turbine / Steam turbine)? 2)can Gas turbine and Steam turbine be operated in parallel,from 'reliabilty' of power considerations?

My firm is competent to perform the studies that you need. However, we focus on the entire operation and how energy usage and plant energy balance fits your economics. A key issue NOW is how much power you need, whether it is relative constant load or fluctuating, and how long your plant runs each day/week. Maybe IC engine generator(s) may be more economically appropriate- or a mix of several types. To your second question- All types of generators can operate simultaneously if fed through a "matching" regulator.
