Lap Timer

01/26/2008 12:06 PM

I would like to build a lap timer system for my slot car track. I need to come up with the triggering device that will be used register when a car has passed, which will start the timer as well as record lap times. I would rather not use a 2 peice setup, such as emitter and detector LEDs. Possibly magnetic reed switches or maybe some sort of distance measuring device. I also need a way to interface this with a pc and might need to write some sort of software for capturing and displaying the data. Any suggestions?

Try the LED and sensor from a balled mouse.

An optical mouse (upside down) might just measure velocity as well.

A coil with a magnet passing over it.

A limit switch.

Old turntables had a nice sensor.

These people make a lovely little device called the IRDOT [Infra-Red Detection Of Trains]. Though intended for the UK model railways hobby it must surely have application here? Simply connect the relay output clean contacts to some sort of timer/counter.

Usual disclaimer applies.
