ACRYLIC SINKS

01/27/2008 1:59 PM
How durable are Acrylic Sinks? Do they scratch easy? I have read conflicting views on their scratchability!

Acrylic does scratch easilly...but at least you could polish out a scratch...cant be any worse than stainless steel...(My Son wiped down our hob with a scourer..)

Porcelain is probably hardes..but how big is the budget?

It does. I installed an acrylic sink in my kitchen two years ago, and now I regret this and want to go back to my old stainless steel, only this time I'll fluff it with rock-wool at the bottom to negate the awful clanging noise it had, which prompted me to go acryl in the first place.

Not only it scratches easily, but I banged one of it's corner-rims at the top by mistake, and although it didn't crack the sink, it now has a small but deep notch there, which is difficult to clean.

Acrylic bath on the other hand, is another story altogether.

It's silky smooth, and relatively warm in winter. Let me tell you, it's a blast.

You can get self adhesive rubber compound damping sheets to get over the noise problem. Your DIY store should be able to help or find a car HiFi shop & ask about Dynamat although that will be more expensive.

(Scratch -- don't). Does that mean don't do it or it doesn't scratch?!!

My limited experience has been that they look real good until you use them.

plus they cost more than the reliable stainless steel type.

So many questions and so little time. First of all acrylic sinks are sold under the guise that they are repairable. Very true, but does one want to "repair" the sink every time it needs it? Stainless steel sinks are good if you are willing to spend the money for a high quality one. There are also glass sinks to consider. I do not see if this is for a kitchen or bathroom or bar type area. If you are willing to toss out money for the research of the "most durable" that might be your best approach. Gotta fly.

No kidding! You mean I could repair my acrylic sink? Its all scratched, and it needs a new inside clear coat. I bet I would have to take it out to do that wouldn't I?

Geat, another thing I have to do for the wife.

Does anyone have a good word for porcelain sinks? Easy to clean & very durable unless you manage to drop something heavy & pointy in it.

You just said it. They might crack, but scratch and acid resistant they are indeed. Like ceramic tiles, you may use any compound, aggressive as they may be, for cleaning, to get them look as new once again.
