Terminology: Fibre Optics vs. Optical Fibre

01/31/2008 8:45 PM

Do the terms 'Fibre optics' and 'Optical fibre' convey same meaning or are these separate technologies / applications?

Re: Fibre optics

Hello nvmani

The Umbrella or General Term:

"Fibre Optics" is everything to do with light transmission, modulation, control through a fibre, generally made of special glass, but could be made of almost anything in Fibre form: Ice, Translucent Plastic, and other materials which could fulfil any or all of those above functions.

The Specialised under the above Umbrella Term, Term:

"Optical Fibre" is a general term applied to the special glass fibres, used to transmit, modulate or control light, from one place to another.

These fibres are used mostly for Control and/or Communication, in cables, mostly on land or undersea, and Internet, TV, Radio, and other Communication links today travel in some degree via "Optical Fibres".

Hope that assists you.

Kind Regards....

Good answer, the only thing that I would add is that generally it is the same or similar types of fiber used for both.

But particularly for data transmission at very high frequencies and longer distances, there are some very fine glass fibers that are so fine that light does not get reflected back and forth from the sides (multi mode) but ONLY goes down the fiber center in what we call single mode.....these types would normally not be used when you need to illuminate something visually from a distance I feel, but I could be wrong there. Anything is possible!!

Good answer but let me add, with reference to cable;

Fibre optic cable refers to the entire cable constituents (core, cladding, sheat and armour and the bundle in a multicore cable)

While optical fibre cable refers to the fibre core (i.e. the single strand)

Cheers,

Ethobil

Fiber optics is a field of engineering and technology including all components of an optical transmission of data, from the transmitting laser to the receiver. In between, there are optical fibers or cables, optical connectors, splitters, repeaters, drop-ins, etc.

Optical fiber is just an efficient pipe for light. Besides telecommunications, optical fibers can be used for photonic transmission of power or direct transmission of an optical image such as endoscopy.

Agreeing with Hottech, we use blocks of Fibre Optic material to transmit images over a short distance. These are hard, solid blocks made from bundles of glass optical fibres & the ones we use are anything from 18mm to 200mm in diameter.

Hi Nigh,

Please tell me where are made those optical clads you say you use. I'm interested to find a supplier for a custom made one.

Thanks
