the best automation?

02/10/2008 5:33 AM

hello everyone!

I would like some oppinions on the best(s) automation manufactures there are?

I mean , in this mechanisms wich one may be considered to be the best?

And I am not refering only to the hardware rellyabilitie, but the software control aswell.

(ease to use and to program,SCADA,and software updates)

perhaps it is a lot to ask...!!

It´s that this world is very big, and I aprecciate some other looks on this matter!

Have a nice day all!

perhaps it is a lot to ask...!!

That is a lot to ask!

The members here come from different places, lines of work and, in some cases, different times. You might possibly get a different answer from each of them and that won't help you one bit.

Just to satisfy your interest...

I use Allen-Bradley's PLC5, SLC5, and CLx (Control Logix). I like their products though I have to say, I'm biased. I've been using them almost exclusively for the past 14 years. I've some experience with Siemens S5, Selectron and Goulds Modicon.

Their HMI, RSView, is also good but I've heard that Wonderware is better. I've never used Wonderware but that may change in the future.

For instruments, I've used Foxboro, Rosemount, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Endress & Hauser, Yamatake, Sartorius and a few others. I've decided that I won't use one exclusively, though I do have preferences for certain types (Foxboro for gauge pressure, Rosemount for hydrostatic level, Yokogawa for flow, etc.).

I've known some people who use one manufacturer only. That choice may not necessarily be because they like the brand but more for convenience. You only have to deal with one supplier maybe. Everyone becomes familiar with the equipment since it's from the same manufacturer. Stocking of spare parts is easier and less costly. I could go on but I don't have the time .

Your own choice will be different also. Your needs and the way you think is unique and your experiences will also take a different tack from everyone's.

I may not have answered your question but that's my choice too!

As rule here is nothing to add after Vulcan comments. If provided there not only a lot to ask but an endless to answer. Impossible to find the best manufacturer but you can find good when you'll have come to end decision what you really need for your project.

Reliability is crucial factor which depends not only of hardware but software.

Why didn't you ask about cost? This factor thought to be very significant so often.

For "quick start" SCADA is good, especially if you need friendly and good designed HMI for your applications as well as to transmitt data further for db processing, web and so on.

Known brands of SCADA soft are very expensive, though so much hardware suppliers offer its SCADA and OPC for customers. Attractive advantages of SCADA is only tip of iceberg. Do not be surprised to find on your way so much underwater rocks. But it's quite workable and fast approach.

Brands were mentioned by Vulcan for traditional programming way are very good. I would advice you in additional to study Mitsubishi (Alpha series) and Advantech products just as cost-effective.

Best is enemy for good. Good luck.

tanks to all!!

I did work with Mitsubishi, but my experience was not very happy with that equipment (and it was a top of the line model)

Curiously I found that others models, from Mitsubishi, from lines less expensive and simple, to work very well in most applications, and this came to me as a surprise!

Any way, I think I´ll study the material from those that you have referred in your comments as for another path -I wanted to ear more about choices, and now I have some !

Have a nice Sunday!

I recently started using Automation Direct as a supplier for basic PLC and HMI needs. They are extremely competitive on price and so far I have been satisfied with their quality and service.

If you need robotics, ABB does a great job. Fisher / Provox and Bailey makes a good DCS. It all depends on scale, and complexity.

Check out our website at www.remotecontroltech.com. We manufacture wireless switching systems that primarily operate at 27 Mhz.
