How to reduce electric consumption

02/10/2008 7:59 AM

we have a machine which is running on 125 hp 3 ph electric motor. The units consumed by the machine in daytime is 12 units for producing a certain qantity whereas during nightshift it increases to 16 units for the same production. Why this is happening? what may be the probable causes? pls help.

Dear Friend,

Please clarify the question.

<daytime is 12 units for producing a certain qantity whereas during nightshift it increases to 16 units>

Are you lumping the Bright lighting loads and arriving at 16 p.u.?

Maybe describe the process -- more.

Where is your meter connected? If the meter measures the entire plant or factory, the difference may be due to lighting consumption. I think that's what mukulmahant is saying.

Could there be something different with your product during the night (when it's cold)?

Without proper data, it is difficult to make an assessment.

frnd,

basically the machine is used for processing the food and we have installed a separate electricity meter for monitoring the electricity consumption, some one month back

we have found some causes for it , that is

1) Idle running of the machine: this may happen because there is no incharge in the night shift

2) High voltage or voltage fluctuation

3) overloading of the machine

4) jamming of the machine

5) skill of the operators

i just wanted to know whether there could be anu other reasons?

pls guide on the same

Your list seems quite fine.

The thing to do now is to quantify how much each cause is contributing to the increase.

If the quantification fully accounts for the increase, then you don't need to look further.

If the quantification results in a close figure (maybe 95 to 99% close), it's probably accurate enough.

If there's a big discrepancy, then you need to look for other causes.

Actually, you should be doing the analysis already. You'll only know if you need to look further by determining if all the causes account for the increase.

If it were me, I would work a night shift to observe any operational changes.

Are there any pieces of large equipment off the same electrical feed? If they operate only at night, then there may be a voltage drop, causing higher amperage.

You'll have to invstigate further. Usually the cause for this type problem is something simple.

I agree, it is a little unusual to have an increase in electrical consumption at night, normally because the grid load is lower, the voltage rises a little. The higher voltage uses less amperage to create the same power. But even at the wildest voltage fluctautions, the difference of 25 per cent seems like a lot!

You have eliminated the usual suspects...what is left is lighting loads. Find the marijuana grow operation, you will find your missing electricity. (look for the switch hidden underneath the machine)
