02/10/2008 8:57 AM

Hi all, I just wanted to now , how does a vaccum pump work. I mean what is principle of operation and what is term VOM related to vaccum pump, actually i have heard it from a friend of mine who knows a bit of vaccum pump operation but not completely. Sorry but a layman question, what is maximum value of vaccum that can be produced.

There are many different types of vacuum pumps, Rotary Vane, diffusion, cryogenic, turbo-molecular drag, etc. For information on how each works you could try searching on Global Spec and google . You might be able to get some info from manufacturers. Alcatel, Edwards, Varian, Inficon come to mind. As to your question concerning maximum vacuum, my experience is that a properly operating pump can achieve 10 millitorr. I have seen some achieve as low as 2 - 3 milliTORR. Normal Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 760 TORR or 760,000 milliTORR. (2-3 milliTORR is a serious vacuum). If you can't find the information you want, send me an e-mail and I will see if I can find some training info. Several years ago I produced some animated power-point presentations explaining in detail how vacuum pumps work. (If I can find it).

I've personally run turbo pumps up to 10^-9 torr and cryo pumps to 10^-13 torr (using liquid helium). Roughing pumps such as the rotary vane type are usually good to low 10^-3. I've heard that getter or ion pumps can get as low as 10^-15 torr, but I havent actually ever used one of those.
