If you are much more specific about the project and the actual area you need help in. People will be only too keen to come up with ideas.

At the moment we don't know if your 'robot' is the size of a cigarette packet or a car!
How big? What is it meant to do? Cost? Precision? Just for fun? Load handling? Power source? Mechanical movement by screw thread, pneumatics, belt drive, cable, thread? Shoe size?

Blimey that's a serious bit of kit...well outside my mechanical hobyist input I'm afraid.

Mind there are still many ways to do it, as an x,y,z movement... or a rotary base with pivoting joited arm.

If there is room for a framework over the 1m area the x,y,z will be simpler.

Would an overhead crane do the trick or it has to be a device that can do push-pull?

Please visit my website www.artecrobotics.com and I am sure you will get a sufficiently good idea of the type of robot to suit your application requirement, on the HOME page itself.

In any case, please state or describe what you want the robot to load/unload the material; a furnace?,a machine tool? a chemical bath?....You have mentioned 3 Kg. weight of item having a dia of 15 mm and 150 mm in height. The material, if steel does not exceed 210 gms. are you bundling these rods in batches of 15 or what? Please mention the rate of loading/unloading required viz. number of pieces per minute or hour etc.

I have designed and implemented robots for a variety of applications as will be visible from my website, ranging in sizes of single component to full helicopters and weight of a few Kg. to several tonnes and at very optimised speeds.

You are welcome to pose specific requirements as I speciallise in CUSTOM design (one-off) applications.
