I would imagine it's a small low voltage dc permanent magnet motor/gearbox with an eccentric weight or roller. Take the machine apart and have a look.

The vibrator in a play station hand controls is slightly bigger.

Actually it is a small DC motor with an off balance flywheel.

The vibrator in an sander is just a cam with a small offset.

I haven't opened a massage machine yet and I don't know if the circular motion is desired.

An ultra sound welder generates the vibrations using a crystal. Maybe that is what is required.

Somehow I doubt that cell phones use wee little motors . They probably use some type of piezo-electric gizmo that gets the shakes when zapped by battery volts.

Correct. I've played with them. No... not for that purpose.

Ummm...not to put too fine a point on it Del, but it's actually YOU that's eccentric...don't know about the tiny motor, though!

What an eccentric idea. Quickly now, who can open up his/her cellphone first to check? As Engineers, it would not do to actually obtain a manual. Much more elegant to grab a screwdriver and pop the thing open. However, I'm still in favour of piezo's.

Have you seen the bristlebot that uses the motor from a mobile or pager to drive it along!

Tiny motor with eccentric... not induced piezo.

Try RS Electronics they have a wide range of DC motors of different voltage ratings. Best of all they available in most countries... a quick internet search will get you on your way.

"...or what kind of vibrating motor can i use which is stronger tha the one used in cell phones..."

Just how strong do you want it to be? Some Barcaloungers used to have built-in vibrators (don't know if they make 'em any more) and they can be researched at:

http://barcalounger.com/products/index.php

Beyond that, there are vibrators available (not readily nor cheap, but they exist) that can simulate earthquakes for room-sized building mock-ups. Maybe some detail on the application will get better results?

I have actually been in one of them. Down in Florida, there is a tourist attraction that has a lot of "illusions" on display. Most of which are interactive also.

Trying to remember what it's called, I believe it's The House of Wonders?

That would be one hell of a massage.

AC Current + coil, = 60 hrtz vibration. recripocating head electric shavers and clippers do not use motors and gears. Too many parts to break and wear out. KISS

Re: vibrating motor

Thanks to u All ...

This helps, I can summerise your responses into three distinct categories:

1- Vibration motors for pagers etc ... they are small work from 1.8 to 3.3v

2- use a small dc motor with an even load

3- Piezzo electric

4- this my addition solenoids.

I just have to add some anlytical work about vibration itself.

Thanks a lot this will help with my work ...
