Cigarette lighter

02/21/2008 9:27 AM

My girlfriend looked at my disposable cigarette lighter the other day and asked why the gas compartment is sectioned into two halves.

She was most satisfied that she came up with a question to which I couldn't think of an answer, so my friends, can you help me with an answer.

I will be most gratefull and she will be most irritated.

The divider is strictly for structural strength.

I've spent many a happy hour watching the gas flow between the compartments.

Hello Guest,

Your eyesight must be exceptional to see a gas flow inside a lighter.

Most folks see a liquid fuel flow.

Kind Regards....

If the diveder is only a structural component, why is there only a passage at the top?

The divider also works to keep the draw tube in the liquid [fuel].

In the lighter I'm looking at, the divider ends just short of the bottom. It looks like this;

Interesting,

I held a bic up to a light [passage @ the bottom], I don't have the cheapo I was refering to?

must be brain fade!

I wonder how they fill Bic's? since they don't have the obvious fill valves as the 1's in your pics.

It's not very clear, but there is a white tube that descends to just above where the divider ends. When the button is depressed, fuel changes to gas. I think (OK guess) that gas pressure is the same whichever compartment it's in. In other words, it doesn't matter which side of the divider the liquid levels are.

Lots of entertainment here.

MACA, your girlfriend is observant and curious about stuff. Don't throw her away just yet. She may be a prize (I'm serious!). Most women don't think about nor observe such things. Thank gawd this is not about fingernail polish.

As one respondent said "structural", probably right and correct. Also, I would tend to agree that the BIC lighters I've seen do not have the middle separator, but still have the same operational expectations as described next.

I figure too that it only has a downside where the fluid can move to the other side for awhile (when 50% or so of it is used up) and where the guy is stubborn in lighting. Rotating or shaking it so that the fluid moves back to the wick and all is well.

I shall take this opt about these lighters and to make this adder: Typically, they have a label (that nobody ever reads?) that says something like "do not subject to direct sunlight". True. I've had one explode when laying on the car seat in direct sunlight. I had two new/full that exhausted their fluid while at the beach one day, both within an hour or so. Then, I read the label. And yes, the plastic had split at a point of opportunity, near the bottom as recall. Given a very local igniter (cigarette?), something very volatile could have occured. Just don't let them exposed to direct sunlight for any period of time: They will seep or explode!

But does this affect the gas pressure at the outlet ? Hmmm. Surely the pressure in each section would be the same ? I'm currently sectioned myself, and they don't let me play with lighters or sharp instruments. In nice cheap butane disposable lighters, the fuel turns to gas. Stinky petrol lighters are no fun with their wads of absorbant material.

Middle wall = less space inside

Less space inside = less liquid gaz

Less gaz = more profit

I make that about 13p. Where do you buy ? I saw a scientific calculator in a 'pound-shop for, well, £1. Strange. Good value compared to a smoking license. Professor Le Grand appears to have his head stuck where the sun doesn't shine. ID cards to stop under-age drinking has been a rip-roaring success. Not.

Yep! 10 in a packet from poundland:

http://www.poundland.co.uk/pages/default.aspx

I bought several of the scientific calculators because people at work wanted them. One didn't work: now what's that about "you know you're an engineer when,... you spend N hours repairing something worth next to nothing". It turned out to be a tear in the paper that the keyboard matrix was printed on.

LOL. That one should have been staring me in the face ! I usually get cheap re-fillable lighters, preferably in distinctive colours to stop everyone pinching them. The poundland style look a bit too cheap - the flints often give up before they're spent. I agree about the time spent on fixing stuff that is easier replaced. There's a perverse pleasure in finding out what's wrong and fixing it. Imagine the joy of replacing that paper with something better ! My last visit got me a USB keyboard vacum cleaner, complete with interchangable nozzles and a boost function. What's not to like.

That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode "The Wizard" where Kramer gives Jerry's dad a tip calculator called the Wizard and Jerrys father in turn gives it to all the old timers at the retirement community in Florida where he is campaigning for President.

Come to find out Kramerr got a really good deal on Whizzers - the cheap knock off - and that it in fact miscalulates tips. This greatly upset the community.

Ha! Yup. That was a good one.

I would imagin Bics don't have a divider due to the strength of the outer housing and use of a different material. The cheap liters can be smashed / cracked a lot easier than a Bic.

That was a very good article!! Now if we could only invoke a sense of responsibility in the litterbugs on Midway. I personally use the trusty Zippo which my wife bought me many years ago. If I were to throw it away, I would find myself shorter, after the application of the skillet to my head. My trusty Zippo does not have the anti-child mechanisms that throw-aways have so it is much easier to use, and in a REAL pinch, I could fuel it with unleaded gasoline... which is what I use in my camp stove and lantern.

I'd be willing to bet it's more than just structural, likely related to maintaining the gas/liquid interface at the correct surface pressure, but have no verification (yet). Will research further as time permits...

OK, keep the silly-chair from moving about, but no definitive answer yet - only this:

and:

From which you can clearly see (pun intended, natch) that the two are quite different. It may be structural after all... On a more-or-less (mostly less, but it shows the internal works) related note, check out:

The lighter you picture has a gap at the top, whereas mine had the gap at the base. That musty imply the dividers purpose is only strength.

The stash lighter was fun, but did you see the funny video alongside it ? Must be a weird happenstance type thing.

That's the type I was talking about, after 1/2 the liquid is gone, you can shift all the liquid away from the draw tube, it won't light & so seems to run on liquid.

errr...if you depress the button withhout clicking the flint, you can hear the gas hissing out. You can light it with a match, but that does slightly defeat the purpose of the thing. Many a joyous evening I've been stuck without a lighter. My collection of duffs comes in handy. One lighter with fuel but no flint + one lighter with flint but no fuel = smoking crisis over.

I always get the free matches, if there offered, leave some @ work, jackets, cars,,,,

I even welded a bead, just so I could use the glowing metal to catch a light.

I never had to rub 2 sticks together, yet.........

000 steel wool & a battery to start a small fire.....

anybody else have a good desperation for fire story??

I have resorted to using the grill in the kitchen before now, but it's a bit of a pain to take the thing on camping trips because the cable extension gets snagged up. Those magnesium sparking stick things work good, but you need some decent tinder. Scouting resources wouldn't tell me about chemicals. In a film Anthony Hopkins said fire can be made from an ice lens, but he never proved it.

"...fire can be made from an ice lens..."

This should be possible, given clear enough ice and a well-formed lens, but I'd not care to be where I could make the attempt.

It should be possible to make an ice-lens and test this. I'll google it sometime if I remember. We haven't got any sun at present.

Back in the day, I got tired of the 'projects' Scouting offered for merit badges, too simplistic for me, and started grinding my own lenses. Havent touched polishing rouge for years, but got some pretty decent results for a kid... Clear ice should work, the index of refraction is different from glass, but we're not talking telescopic quality here, just something good enough to focus the sun on some dry tinder. Or maybe some...

Tee hee. I'd need to find one of those machines that makes clear ice. I'm not sure how to do this in a normal freezer - it must be down to the rate of cooling. It would be good fun to try - I'll set my brain cogs in motion......

Some dude appears to have made an ice fire-lighter.

The isobutane (usually) is liquid under pressure, but is a gas when released, and burns as such - liquids don't burn, it's the vapor at the air interface that sustains combustion.

I understand that liquids don't burn, but you need to have a high enough concentration @ the mix valve.

Propane powered devices, such as a forklift usually run on liquid, but a grill runs on vapor.

It all depends on the design.

wow, a thread that I can contriute to:

I am an engineer who has worked in the Bic lighter division in the past.

1) the bic lighters do have an internal web, this, as mentioned previously, is for structural strength.

2) there is a very small hole pierced in the web at the bottom to allow the liquid to move from cell to cell.

3) the gas is injected at the bottom - if you look there is a small metal ball that is pressed into the lighter base after the fluid is injected though the hole.

Re: Cigarette lighter

If you take the flint out of the lighter (the newer the better) you can use the spring as a handle. Seperate the end of the spring enough so that the flint will wedge in. Then using a second lighter hold a flame under the flint using the spring as a handle to keep your little fingers as far away as possible while heating the flint until it glows red/white hot. Once red/white hot fling the whole spring flint device on the concrete hard. This is rcommended fro night time and outdoors. Although I have done it indoor in the daytime.

Now take the flintless lighter and stand it up on an asphalt road edge. Light the thumb button (fluid release) with the good lighter until it the plastic combusts/holds it's own flame. Now step back and watch the thing shoot a fire stream. After allis said and done the plastic should be a barf looking puddle on the pavement. It will have gotten so hot that the entire chunk of pavement will come up with the plastic.

Oh misspent youth.

Well folks, just have to add in my two cents worth. After all the great ideas and suggestions, you've all missed the obvious. It's a baffle to prevent the fuel from sloshing around and affecting the smokers equilibrium. They use a similar idea in tankers - both trucks and ships. They simply scale it up.

Cheers

It also explains why I stagger home from the pub - the lighter is lying horizontal in my pocket, and all the fuel sloshes up and down it's length.

Not lately, I haven't - 2.7 inches rain Sat., and while Sun. was nicer weather, still dampish. Yesterday was better, but I was at work, while today, storms moving in and high(er) winds with rain in the forecast. Tonight, COLD (high 20's) and tomorrow night (low 30's), warming toward the end of the week. I know, I know, ain't a patch on the 12' of snow y'all have up there, but it always snows there this time of year, right? Here, never.

Man, that's balmy weather. When we crawl out of our igloos and the temp is as high as 20 - 25 and the sun's out, we put on our T-shirts and fire up the barby. Nothing like a nice rack of smokey ribs, beer cooling in the snow, great tunes and sunshine. Yeah, we get that only a couple times a year, but then we got no 'gators chasing our dog through the back yard spilling our beer.

Global Warming will ruin all that of course and melt most of that 12' of snow, but hey, life's like that isn't it?

Have a good one...

I was just shooting in the dark on the education thread.

I always enjoy when several people stamp their feet & loudly exclaim their disgust & threaten to leave. A certain Aussie seems to be outraged most of the time.

This is sort like the corner pub where all the old guys get together to grouse [bitch].

Tee hee. I must go catch up there in a minute. Some of the best ideas are drawn on beer mats. You'd love the TV series Grumpy Old Men, it's hilarious. I may adopt the tag line 'Enraged of Etherville'.

I like what they did to Del ! The Polar bear/tiger thing looks a bit of a pansy.
