I'm really interested in what engineers would consider to be the greatest engineering challenges facing the human race today. Some engineers I have spoke with strongly believe it's the environment (e.g. natural disasters, global warming, etc), although in my mind the verdict is not out on global warming. Others have told me it's the human food supply (agriculture, beef, food processing, etc). Yet, a friend of mine, a retired engineer believes strongly in infrastructure as a vital engineering challenge of the 21st century. Personally, advancements in nuclear or alternative energy is high on my list although I'm not sure it would be #1. Although far-fetched some believe colonizing another planet should be our main priority. I believe that will be obtainable someday (if human's survive long enough on earth) but in the next 92 years? I don't think so.
By no means am I indicating anywhere near the most important engineering challenges facing us today, but just wanted to share a little on what others have told me thus far.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Dominic
